" Just cast someone who is actually in their late teens or early twenties."

It's called selling tickets. In these threads already, several people have said they'd see the show for Amy Spanger alone. There 'ya go!

you would think there are a million girls, but there are very few who can sing, dance, AND are funny like Amy Spanger. I am excited to see this.

I saw Amy in every performance she did of Tick Tick Boom, and I saw ROA enough times to feel pretty confident that she's just right for Sherrie.

Jane how come you got to see Amy in every performance of Tick Tick Boom? Did you work in this production? Im glad Amy is back on Broadway! Do you think she has any chances of winning a Tony or get a nominated as Sherrie? Im not familiar with this musical.

Just wanna say I don't think Amy is too old for the part of Sherrie at all. Sherrie and Drew are struggling young adults just about to give up on their rock n roll dreams. They can easily be in their early thirties. Late teens early 20s is too young for the part imo. Besides, Amy looks younger that she is anyway.

Kelli was really good but Amy rocks harder. Great choice I think.

Muscle-I was house manager of the theater (Tick Tick Boom)

As for a possible Tony-I don't think so. I could be wrong, but I think ROA is like one big party, great music, lots of fun. I don't know if voters will take it seriously enough to put it in the caliber of an award winning show.

It sure would be nice though!

Ha ha, yes the entire universe can't wait to buy tickets to see world superstar Madonna in ROA.

Oh, wait, it's not Madonna, it's Amy-no-one-knows-who-she-is-but-her-mom Spanger!

I think Spanger would be perfect, in part because she's not too young. Since Constantine is in his 30s pairing him with some dewy young thing just wouldn't be ideal, in my mind.

YEAH!!! James Carpinello rocks my socks. Best Sonny Malone ever!!!

You're hurt and you're scared because you doubt your own artistic ability.

Congrats to the cast!! I think Amy is a fantastic choice. I loved her in the Wedding Singer and she has great chemistry with Constantine. Boy, can she belt. This cast is going to rock the hell out of those songs!!

this show is not going to make more than $100 extra because amy spanger is appearing. come on. reality?

that said, ive seen her in RENT and TickTickBoom (and, uh, sorta in chicago) and shes an incredible talent. Insane voice. Very exciting.

I think she's hot, but I still think she's old....and she won't sell more tickets. I think more people are familiar with her ex-husband than her.

Wow Jane, by "several people" do you mean one? That's the 100 bucks Ole Chum was talking about :P

That's about all Amy will add to ticket sales... Hey, if Kelli has a bigger family, she would probably be able to "sell" more tickets than "Amy's fanbase"!

Kelli Barrett was wonderful in the role of Sherri. Amy Spanger is a phenomenal talent that is gonna kick it up a notch. Those of you that are saying she's too old are jealous hacks. She's perfect for this part. Perfect. You just wait...

Seeing all the "Full House" chatter has been hysterical. John Stamos is solid 8 shows a week and I wouldn't be surprised if it weren't for that pesky TV Doctor Show...

Mr. Carpinello will ROCK THE HOUSE as Stacey Jaxx. ROCK IT!

And of course, Constantine is gonna bring it. He's fantastic in this show...

I say CONGRATS to Rock of Ages for some fabulous casting. It'll be BIGGER. LOUDER. FUNNIER. Oh the anticipation. I am such a fan. Can't wait for St. Patrick's Day...!...

As much as I love Carpinello and Spanger, I still think this show is going to be dreadful (apparently I'm in the minority on this thread though).

I despise Constantine and Andre Ward...

Sigh...I'm more excited to get my CD of MAGGIE FLYNN than seeing ROCK OF AGES live...who knows though...maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

WithoutATrace, that's an understandable sentiment, but I do think a good deal of enthusiasm here comes from those of us who have seen the off-Broadway production. I went in fearing it would be a by-the-book, jukebox cheesefest and was most pleasantly surprised. It's clever, funny, and totally tongue in cheek. It *knows* it's about bombastic 80s hair band music and it never commits the sin of taking itself too seriously. I think most people who have a passing fondness for that type of music and just go in just expecting to have a good time--not expecting Chekhov or Sondheim--should enjoy it. (Assuming the BW production doesn't mess up the off-Broadway version!)

Have to agree....Spanger, even though very talented, is way too old for this role...there as so many young, talented gals out there that could do this job. Just not the right fit.

I, for one, am BEYOND stoked for the transfer!
Happily humbled to have seen the Off-B'way run this past
October, and boy, did I fall in love with it!
Just booked my seats for the Brooks Atkinson!
DON'T STOP BELIEVIN'!

As someone new to this arena of message boards, I have to applaud the bold opinions found here and everyone's right to voice them. It does, however, seem a little too easy to take pot shots at the real-life age of an Actress... and state with complete confidence that a role should have gone to a "young, talented gal".

Talent wins, folks. Nobody seems to care that the Leading Man is in his 30's, making the pairing even more realistic. Amy Spanger got the part because she was the best. The end. A gazillion young, talented gals auditioned........the halls of Ripley-Grier were bubbling over with "Harden My Heart" for days. Ms. Spanger, I guess, was just the young, talented gal that had that something extra...(talent,pipes,experience,comedic timing...)

The great thing about the Theater is suspending disbelief and individually taking what we need from the experience. As it seems, words are often eaten in this forum (Full House?)...& I look forward to the chewing up of this unfortunate topic once March 17th rolls around.

One of the reasons Rock of Ages is such an awesome show is that it's in on its own joke from the get-go. A big, loud, fun, 80's silly Rock party with one agenda. To have nothin' but a good time...and it don't get better than this...

singasimple,
are you new? Because your post is one of the first ones I have agreed with on this board in about a year.
I completely reiterate your statement of the show "knowing what it is" from the get go. This show is stupid fun, and the audience knows it from the moment they walk to their seats.
this show is fun and silly and has insanely great music with amazing voices singing it. Again I say, Big hit of the season. This show is gonna make a ton of money. Here, vegas, LA tour, London. i wish I were an investor/producer.
