MATILDA is far from a dud. Further proof that this message board is full of duds itself.
I loved MATILDA more than about 95% of shows I've seen in the city over the 4 years that I've lived here. It's an excellent adaptation of a classic piece of children's literature. I don't know what you were expecting going in, but, in my opinion, it hits the Roald Dahlian nail on the head in every single aspect.

I can see how a lot of people trash shows repeatedly being overkill and, even worse, trashing shows they didn't see based on what they heard.
But someone writing their thoughts after paying to see something seems valid. I've been to a lot of hits that didn't make it, and a lot of duds that had long runs. It's all subjective.
For what it's worth, I loved Matilda again last night. Not QUITE as much as I did in London, but that's more to do with the fact that it was a little tighter when I saw it there (many months into its run).
"One thing is true.. the best theater is definitely not happening on Broadway."
I could not agree more.
Yeah, I'm really excited to see MATILDA again in late April because I've been thinking (as I've listened to the cast recording) that maybe it'll be a bit (for lack of a better word) better when things have tightened up a bit.

You mean it's happening in the West End, from which Matilda transferred? That makes sense.
The best theatre happens where the best theatre happens.
I have seen great shows in the West End and total disasters as well.

I lived in Florida for seven years and there was some really fine theatre there but also some duds as well.
Wherever you go... there is good theatre and duds! To put a blanket over one geographic place does not work.
You can go to Playwrights Horizons and see something wonderful. You can go to Playwrights Horitzons and see something awful. It is the nature of theatre.
Saw MATILDA last week. Can't quite put my finger on why I didn't like it as much as I had hoped I would when I walked out of the theater. At the time I was not crazy about most of the music. 3 days ago I listened to it online and have been listening since. I actually want to see it again. I have never experienced such a strange kind of conflicting feeling about a show like I am with this one. JMO
