So I have been hearing some not so great stuff about Memphis but yesterday I stopped by Shubert Alley and watched their performance and I was very impressed. The music sounded great and the cast looked amazing. I don't know what the book is like so that may be the problem but by the sounds of the show yesterday I say it's going to do pretty well.
Great! Im excited to see how others take it in :)
ill def initly be seeing it
The clips on Youtube look truly dreadful.
Who is the guy singing that big power ballad at the end of the clip from the 5th Ave Theater on YouTube? He sounds awful.
Okay, I just watched the clips again for the first time in awhile and they are awful.
Which clips?
All I could think of as I watched that clip was Chad Kimball = Sam Harris in First Wives Club BWW stagetube videos.
I loved it in La Jolla. Not a perfect show, but I had a great time, and was really entertained.
Also loved it at La Jolla. I hope they worked on the ending...there was something very off there.

How was the BBQ?
What the %$#@ happened to Chad Kimball?! He used to be so pretty.
"How was the BBQ?"
Having once lived in or around Memphis for over forty years, I love that comment. Wish I still lived there. I'm hungry.

^ I live on the other side of Tennessee and boy do I want to get out!
I actually thought that the clips were very impressive. Hopefully the rest of the music is as good as what was sampled in that montage.
I also wasn't impressed by the clips, but they sounded awesome during the event the other day! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4fi3V7l8SQ

Oh. I was excited for this show, but those clips were just boring and not very tuneful, ha. We'll see though. I'm still excited to see it.
I give Chad Kimball 3 weeks before he blows his voice out.
That last song is ... ow. My ears.
He sounds really bad.
Does anyone know if the set/costumes/lighting are going to be revamped for the Broadway production? They don't come off as all that appealing in the video clips.
Having seen Memphis in San Diego, it is very difficult to find the words to reconcile the short clips on youtube with the actual show.
I try to see everything here in So California and I'm not sure what changes will be made. Memphis is pretty good. I will stand by that statement. My feeling after seeing the musical, however was one of frustration. I felt the creative team just miss reaching that level you need for a real hit. The book is quite good but with a few changes could be extremely touching and moving.
The song Memphis sung by Kimball at the end of the clip really hits home in the context of the show. And Kimball couldn't be better as the flawed egocentric DJ.
I envy those of you who will soon see the previews. I hope it improves because it has some terrific stuff in it.

Politically correct and simplistic story (blacks good, whites bad till they 'get' the music), generic, boring score. Send it back to Tennessee.

nmartin, while it's nice to find a fellow BBQ fanatic, I was talking about the free Q samples they gave out at the event.

I saw MEMPHIS at La Jolla playhouse and from what I hear, Chad Kimball never missed a performance - and not in Seattle either. I only know this because a friend of my friend is his understudy and he never went on so I am doubting his voice will blow out anytime soon. I can't seem to find a clip on here of his performance at Broadway on Broadway but if he sang "Memphis Lives in Me" I find it unbelievable that he sounded terrible? His performance in that show was amazing in La Jolla, and I am so excited to see it on Broadway! That number gave me goosebumps! I wrote a review last year and I am so excited to see what they have done with this work - a true original Broadway musical! GOOD LUCK TO THE CAST!
