MY dream cast would have been ALL opera singers-including Callas.
But, since I can't have that, can Kristine Opelais or Elina Garanca put in an appearance??? (As Sharon or the other girl.)
Add me to the list of those who are thrilled about this.
I'm quite certain Ms. Streep is going to be brilliant.

Dunaway's version is coming out in 2015.

Dunaway's version is coming out 200Never. She apparently made a deal with David Geffen signing over the film rights.
Incidentally, here is Danielle De Niese who was cast as Sharon when Dunaway was trying to make the movie. She was good casting.

Sheep all of you in favor of Streep! She needs to go away for a long time. So sick of her.

“Wilmingtom- Nowhere can you learn how to chew the scenery better than Yale Drama School, Joe Papp and Mike Nichols.”
HAHAHAH This. A thousand times, this.
It's only Page Six, and HBO declined to comment. I wouldn't count the chickens before they're hatched.
Did anyone see Dixie Carter do it? I have heard she was brilliant.

I saw Dixie Carter, as well as Zoe Caldwell and Patti LuPone. What was great about Dixie's interpretation is that she played down the "diva" aspect of the role. I felt her interpretation was more about the "woman" than the "diva."
What I felt Dixie Carter brought in was a reflective aspect that is projected on Sharon rather than a diva reflected on Sharon.
The real Maria Callas looked eerily like Donna Murphy. I've always wanted to see Murphy tackle MASTER CLASS.
Somethingwicked, I pretty much wouldn't know what to do with myself if the glorious Donna Murphy starred in MASTER CLASS, can you imagine? I'm still waiting for her to do a play on Broadway. It's odd she hasn't been in one.
So...I was watching BURLESQUE for like the 30th time this week cause it seems that's the only thing playing on Oxygen and I simply cannot turn it off when I stumble upon it. And I thought, "OH! If only Cher were playing Callas!"
I'm half joking.
Maybe a quarter joking.
Cher would be better as Charlie Callas.
Faye said in an interview in November of 2013 (link below) that 3/4 of her film was completed. Why would she abandon it if that much was shot? Anyone have the back story on why she sold the rights? Could her version still come out? Please let us see that footage some day, it would be extremely interesting I think.
Michael Bennett tell us what you know about the Dunaway/Geffen deal - first time I've heard of that, thanks.

This would have been another great role for Lea Michele.

Much to everyone's surprise, it's official.
Official: Meryl Streep to Star in HBO's Screen Adaptation of Terrence McNally's MASTER CLASS

Is this happening? I was looking forward to this.
Wait, so she's doing the HBO portrayal of Maria Callas AND the biopic of Florence Foster Jenkins? Talk about opposite ends of a very specific spectrum.
Is Master Class still happening? I assumed it wasn't going to after the unfortunate passing of Mike Nichols.

I doubt it. Nichols was casting at the time of his passing. I imagine a large part of Streep's interest (not to mention HBO's) was Nichols.

All I see now when I see Meryl Streep is, well, Meryl Streep. Or I should say, Meryl Streep pretending to be this character, or that character. She may be a great actress, but it's just too difficult to suspend disbelief with her anymore….for me anyway
The actress who used to be this chameleon who could meld herself into any role has become so overexposed because of her talent and I really don't care to see much of anything she is in anymore.
Because all I see is Meryl Streep. Not the character she is playing.
"Yeah, I hadn't seen that it's being done on HBO. So she'll snag a bunch of TV awards just because she's MERYL STREEP and all -- same difference."
Here is a new article on Florence Foster Jenkins...

Just stating an opinion; no need to be catty.
The best way to disagree is to say "I don't agree." And then state your opinion. And/or move on. Thanks.
And on that note, thanks for the "block" option, site operators.
I'm here to discuss theater, with serious-minded posters.
But back to the original topic....wish I had taken the chance to see Caldwell and McDonald. Was in NYC at the time and it would have been awesome to see them.

If all you can see when you see Meryl is Meryl, then I think the fault is either in your eyes or in your heart, or possibly in your soul, wherever it is that the imagination resides.
Sadly, there is no cure for it, because cynicism is an addiction. But sometimes it begins as just an affectation and, in those cases, it can be overcome.

Theater guy 12- of course I agree with you- if someone wants to disagree- just state why and lose the bitchiness. I have never been on a board with such catty, argumentative and unnecessarily provocative posters- people just waiting to post something rude and insulting. What gives? I am a NY gay man- and have seen it all in terms of bitchiness- but, really, on a theater chat room, why do so many allow themselves to exhibit such loathsome behavior- it is really off-putting for a new poster who would like to discuss and dissect theater- I have been a BWay devotee since I was 12- and have seen so many things- and continue to do so- but it seems you need to have a strong stomach to post here. What gives???????
