I would love to hear people's thoughts on Michael Mayer's not getting a Tony nom for American Idiot. The argument I'm hearing is, he won for directing it already (Spring Awakening) already. That doesn't hold water... saying a director won for another show doesn't work. How he staged what little storytelling there is within the songs was ingenious. The stagecraft was spectacular. You can argue the show itself, but what he did with it was certainly Deserved over the rest!
OH FOR GOD'S SAKE.

You missed the point of that post you are referencing.
Would prefer intelligent arguments (either way) Thanks
I think it's more than just a generational thing, the older people not being able to accept anything new & the younger crowd just liking the rock music. That's too easy. Any real thoughts?
All I know is that Ragtime deserves to be on that list. Beautifully directed.

Well, look at my post in the rant thread. I explained it there. And for the record, I am in my 20s, I didn't think it deserved a nomination.
If that's "too easy," why are you saying you think that's what it is?
Maybe his work on this was just not that good. I don't like his work in general, but I at least think SOME of the things he did with Spring Awakening were interesting. I thought his work on American Idiot was pretty horrendous and sloppy, and that has nothing to do with either being old or not liking "new" things. I just think he has some serious incapabilities as a director. Having watched some of his work over the past couple of years, I feel like he is probably a pretty smart guy, and I think he has a lot of really cool ideas. But I think he has trouble translating those into things that effectively work on stage, and for some reason, doesn't quite bother fixing those problems.
I hope that qualifies as a "real thought."
I agree with you, but that's all you know? Is it really this pointless looking for any real intelligent thought on here?

I think you get the title of Honorary King for the Day of the Oh, Shut Up thread, RSrichie.

Maybe being gracious about being nominated for Best Musical is something AspenVincent will learn with age and maturity.
Over this. What's the point. People don't have to agree, but just the endless caddy chatter is a waste of time.
Because his directing on AMERICAN IDIOT was sloppy and lazy and a retread of what he has done before. What more do you want Your Highness?

Most likely, the nominators remembered his freaky, vainglorious speech after winning for Spring Awakening crowing about how he and the creators "changed the face of musical theater and decided to pass on fueling that ego. Humility thy name should be Mayer.
Aspen Vincent needs to chill the fk out.
RSRichie, you confuse me. I'm not certain what sort of "intelligent" responses you're looking for if Emcee's falls short, and you certainly haven't contributed anything that stimulates such an exchange.

Old folks to understand the young people!!
Aspen Vincent sounds like a big ego driven bitch.

Yes.

OK. C YA. BYE.
You are looking for intelligent discussion, but you failed to see the meaning behind the words. When the others were discussing his winning a Tony Award for directing, they didn't mean JUST for directing. They meant that he directed AI JUST like he directed SA; so he WAS already awarded for his work.
I think he did GOOD work on AI, but not outstanding. I'm more suprised that John Gallagher, Jr wasn't recognized, but not astonished.
But here goes the most simple of explanations: they didn't think his work on AI was exemplar. Period. It has nothing to do with an age difference...if it did, SA wouldn't have been recognized 3 years ago.
THat you disagree is fine...but I don't think it's that hard to grasp.
I saw it. I liked it. I thought the performances were really good...but the show didn't make me FEEL anything. Not joy, not anger, not rage, not anything. THAT is the flaw of the book and of the direction.
