Can anyone please explain why Off-Broadway shows have low operating costs/why Broadway houses can't be the same?
The short answer is that union salaries and rents, which make up the bulk of any show's weekly costs, are significantly lower for off-Broadway.
There is no way the unions will agree to lower their Broadway rates to the off-Broadway rates, and no one wants them to raise their off-Broadway rates to the Broadway amounts.

God help me, this brings to mind what Bette Davis said when Joan Crawford died. "You shouldn't speak ill of the dead, you should only say good. Joan Crawford is dead. Good."
Can't pretend to be sorry to see it go.

Posted: 6/7/11 at 10:45pmI love that you all have such strong opinions about this. It'll do fine off-Broadway, and I'm sure it will tour. It's a hard show to cast, so I can't imagine they'll have multiple productions running at the same time.

Really now? It's musician impersonators.

A national tour for the 2011-2012 season has already been announced, and cities are booked.

The more pertinent question: Has New World Stages ever had a profitable hit? Altar Boyz never made back its money. Many of the high profile shows there lost everything.
Maybe the original run of Rock of Ages? Or the Gazillion Bubble Show?
My point is that for years New World Stages has seen dozens of new shows quickly fold. No wonder they're trying to grab on to something.

In other words, an impersonator.

Has New World Stages ever had a profitable hit?
Yes: Altar Boyz (you already mentioned), Gazillion Bubble Show, Imaginocean, NBS just played it's 3,000th performance, Toxic Avenger had a healthy run, Avenue Q is doing well.
That said, there isn't really such a thing as an "Off-broadway commercial hit" anymore.

Posted: 6/8/11 at 9:29amI love this show and I am glad it found a new home. I am very surprised it is moving to New World Stages but the theater is great and wheel-chair friendly so it should be a great place for it.

TheatreFan4, call it what you wish, but those men are talented.
And they need to pull a Rock of Ages and start selling drinks during the show.
Anyone think Rock of Ages will do the same thing in a year or so?

Posted: 6/8/11 at 11:36amNew World offers drinks at their shows. The only show that you can't take a drink into is Naked Boys Singing. I also think the bar is closed for weekday matinees.

if the ROA movie is a hit the show will stay on broadway for 3-4 more years. I mean it might even move back to a bigger theater if the movie is a hit.
Also with all these shows closing the shows that DO stay open for the fall will actually do ok seeing as the competition will be a lot less in the marketplace. I also think MDQ will die at NWS partly because the name isn't famous. AVE q has a brand name and the people coming to see it now probably have no idea that the show is in a different place then where it was 2 years ago. Genius.
MDQ has no tony nomination, no tony award no brand name. This show will die there. I don't care how low the op costs are.
sidenote:I don't see how Catch me will survive plast labor day. Their op costs have got to be around 650.

"but the theater is great and wheel-chair friendly so it should be a great place for it."
Finally, the show is where it belongs: a theatre that is wheel-chair friendly.

Posted: 6/8/11 at 12:02pmWhile I didn't see the show on Broadway, I saw it twice in Chicago, once at the smaller theatre at the Goodman, and once in its more permanent location, still a very open stage and more intimate theatre. I was surprised by its move to Broadway, and frankly I think it is a perfect show for New Stages, where it should have opened originally.
