Million Dollar Quartet is closing Sunday, I just heard from someone who works at the theatre.
O well it had a healthy run.
I can't say I'm surprised at a closing notice given the grosses lately
Maybe Rent can now move back into it's old home

New World seems to be the retirement home for old shows.

Off-Broadway seems like a better place for this show since its grosses were not doing well.

but re-opening at New World? Why?
The show has played many weeks near or just below its (Broadway level) break-even point. Going off-Broadway will lower that weekly operating cost. They obviously hope to bring in the same weekly $ at their new home. (I doubt it will work.) This show never belonged on Broadway in the first place: It is a dinner-theater level show.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

New World Stages should be renamed The Broadway Retirement Home. Hope something good takes the Nederlander come Fall. Anyone know if they were pushed out because of their attendance issues? Even if their low running costs were keeping them above water, the Nederlanders may have pushed them out because of the low attendance numbers, to get a new show in there.

Posted: 6/7/11 at 8:13pmI think it might do well off-Broadway. Look at Avenue Q, it is selling nights out.

Posted: 6/7/11 at 8:15pmNew World used to be a great place where new plays and new musicals could go but now it's just become a broadway dumping ground. It's a shame.

Would/Could Rent actually move back to the Nederlander?
Im asking because they already sold tickets for the show at New World,
How would they be about changing everyone's tickets?

I agree. New World is an amazing theatre space that I wish would be used to house new and daring works. Its just becoming a sit-down space for Broadway's also-rans.
The place is packed with museum pieces and the odd family show that just wont die.

New World is a fantastic off-Broadway venue because it's so conveniently located, unlike many off-Broadway theaters. It's a shame that rather than have new works benefit from the convenient location, we're getting Broadway re-treads.
I would not be at all surprised if Rent and MDQ were swapping theaters.

Posted: 6/7/11 at 8:41pmno surprise as the show likely had no advance given it's grosses lately.

Posted: 6/7/11 at 8:44pmI highly doubt Rent will be moving back in since they spent so much fixing up the place only to trash it again.

Posted: 6/7/11 at 8:53pmWouldn't it cost a lot of money for Rent to move back to Broadway, after everything has already been budgeted for this off-Broadway run?

Posted: 6/7/11 at 9:00pmAdam, RENT will be going into Stage 1 and MDQ will most likely go into stage 4. In NWS defense, They have Gazillion Bubble show, which does well along with Imagine Ocean. Neither are from Broadway. La Barberia is closing but had a halfway decent run. An original show. Between Worlds closed a bit early but it too was original. So they do bring in original stuff.

Posted: 6/7/11 at 9:07pmUgh really? It had a good run considering it never belonged in a Broadway theatre in the first place. It should just hit the road, make some money, and be done.

Posted: 6/7/11 at 9:21pmOh please. They need to book shows. it was available evidentally or wanted to move off-Broadway.

NWS should just move down to FL and then it'd be the real retirement home for broadway shows.
Can anyone please explain why Off-Broadway shows have low operating costs/why Broadway houses can't be the same?

Posted: 6/7/11 at 9:39pmMy thought? Those bashing should put up the money for something new to move into NWS so they can have what they want there. It's a business people. Get over it.
