Moments of Non-Stop Laughter/Applause

Posted: 4/14/06 at 12:19amWhen I saw Rent recently, there was a group of young girls screaming and clapping at the end of "Seasons of Love" for what seemed like forever. I was relieved when "Happy New Year" started and they began to shut up.

The line in Hairspray with Harvey Fierstein in Motormouth's House to Mrs. Von Tussel (it was said already but it was the wrong quote)
"Hold Mommy's waffles!"

When I saw Thoroughly Modern Millie, the audience cheered for a good minute after Marc Kudisch did the REALLY fast verse in "The Speed Test." Impressive, yes. Worthy of that long of a cheer? I didn't think so.

I saw Julia Murney as elphaba twice in a row and both nights "Well, We can't all come and go by bubble" got roaring laughter AND applause!

"how about during "Once Upon A Time"? You'd think there'd be a major standing ovation after Eden belted that out!"
I saw a clip of the final performance of Brooklyn, and Once Upon A Time got a standing O that lasted for what seemed like forever. It was incredible. I've also got to agree with the "Bushes of Tex" line.

"Spell Cow"
"Can I have a definition?"
"It's a Cow."
"Can you use it in a sentance."
"Please spell cow."

I've been at many of those performances when time does seem to literally stand still. I was at one of the Dreamgirls performances when you could barely get the crowd back in their seats. More recently, and I think I've stated this before, Orfeh in Love, Janis (can't say enough about her performance in that role), stopped the show after she sang the Joplin classic "Ball & Chain" for what seemed like a full five minutes. Standing ovations, screaming, stomping, audience members crying (myself incl). I'll never forget it.
Sadly, being on the west coast, the only tears nowadays are over how BAD everything is. Maybe if i ever get the energy, I'll "review" Happy Days, the Musical, for the board.

Hah! When I saw it, they said 'elephant', and it was tons of laughter, but it has to die down so "Pandemonium" can start.

Posted: 4/14/06 at 2:20pmI'm surprised no one has mentioned the nearly consistent show-stopping "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" from Jersey Boys. Each time I've seen the show, it's started a spontaneous standing ovation in the middle of the show.

Just about every number in Jersey Boys has non stop applause after it especially "Sherry", "Walk Like A Man", and "Can't Take My Eyes Off You"

Posted: 4/14/06 at 11:58pmThe second time I saw Sweet Charity with Christina Applegate, the audience roared with cheers and applause at the end of "If My Friends Could See Me Now." It definitely stopped the show for a good minute or so.

Posted: 4/15/06 at 4:48pmyeah, i also say sweet charity with applegate and after "If My Friends Could See Me Now" the place went crazy! She was amazing the night i saw her. It makes me happy just thinking about it. Idina and Kristen always got huge laughs during the catfight, and one night during popular it took forever to get through because Chenoweth kept topping herself. she was outstanding. Bernadette stopped the show with "roses turn". The audience jumped to their feet. Great night!

Chicago: I Can't Do It Alone. I've yet to agai see the outpouring of applause that happened when Bebe Neuwirth finished the song. It was an amazing thing to see. Especially since she stayed in that split until the audience finally stopped. (Speaking of which, when was the last time the ICDIA cartwheel encore was done? I don't remember it after Bebe left.)
Sunset Blvd.: Standing ovation after With One Look with Betty Buckley. Lasted forever!

Posted: 4/15/06 at 8:01pmAlso at the end of Sweeney Todd when they re-gag Tobias and the stage goes dark, there was tons of applause both times I saw it. TONS. Even when the lights came back up people were still clapping...I couldn't hear the opening verse of the Ballad.

Posted: 4/15/06 at 8:19pmWhenever there is a break for applause is Jersey Boys, the roof is blown off the house. And, yes, as others have said, Sweeney gets a standing ovation as soon as people get over the immediate shock of the whole show.

"I'm Flying" in PETER PAN when they are flying over London. Non-stop applause during the entire flight until the curtain closes and Peter says "This way to Neverland!"
"Hold Mommy's waffles!" I always thought she said "Hold Mommy's wallet"??? I thought the gag was she had to use a paper bag to hold all her money now.

I saw La Cage it was the day before it was closing which was really sad and after I Am What I Am, Gary got a standing ovation, it was wonderful!
I'm friends with Victoria Clark and she got my friend and I 3rd row seats in the orchestra for Light in the Piazza and at the curtain call when she came out you could hear each and every seat go up in unison and just endless applause, they bowed like 15 times. When we went to her dressing room after we all just started crying and i said, "how do you keep it together up there? she looks at me and says, "are you kidding me?! i keep a tissue in my bra, i cry every night especially at the curtain call because the applause is so overwhelming!"
When i saw Sweeney Todd i was so irratated that they didn't have breaks in between the songs to applaud! I was sitting there twisting my hands because i wanted to jump out of my seat and scream Bravo!!! so finally after the first Johanna there is a break for applause and it had been welling up inside everyone for so long that we all started screaming and cheering for about 3 minutes. Then at the end of the show the crowd was on it's feet before anyone actually came out haha

Posted: 4/20/06 at 6:01pmThe end of Betrayed, especially when I saw it with Nathan Lane. When he held up the postcard at that final "Betrayed!" the audience went crazy.

Every 30 seconds in Avenue Q... I don't know if it always happens, but the night I was there, I swear the show took twice as long as it was supposed to because people wouldn't stop laughing. :)
I'm on the bandwagon with "we can't all come and go by bubble!" I died the first time I heard that line... as did everyone else.

There was a LOT of applause after Johanna in Sweeney. Like the person said before me, you just want to stand up and applaud before that! The "with or without his privates" line got a lot of laughs too.
A lot of Spamalot gets a LOT of laughter.
There were a few lines in Drowsy Chaperone that got a loooot of laughter. And Sutton got a lot of applause after "Show Off."
*amateur moment* When I did Beauty and the Beast at school we got a standing ovation (sold-out crowd, 1300 people) for Be Our Guest one night. It was one of the most amazing and gratifying experiences of my life.
