An all-star world premiere of a new musical adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' beloved novel The Count of Monte Cristo is coming in 2026.

Directed by Peter Flynn, the new musical will play Off-Broadway's York Theatre in the spring, running March 12-April 5. Opening night is set for March 19.

Monte Cristo centers on a man wrongfully imprisoned who returns richer, wiser, and bent on vengeance. But as his carefully orchestrated plan unfolds, he must face the ultimate question: is justice enough without love?

With book and lyrics by two-time Tony-nominee Peter Kellogg and music by two-time Richard Rogers Award winner Stephen WeinerMonte Cristo will star Drama Desk Nominee Sierra Boggess as Mercedes, Adam Jacobs as Edmund, James Judy as Danglars, Tony nominee Norm Lewis as Villefort, Stephanie Jae Park as Haydee, Danny Rutigliano as Caderrousse/Abbe, Drama Desk winner Eliseo Roman as Morrell, Daniel Yearwood as Fernand, and Tony winner Karen Ziemba as Carconte/Lucrezia Borgia.

More casting will be announced in the new year.

Developed in The York’s New2NY series, this production reunites the writer of Desperate Measures and the Penelope team.

Glad to see Sierra, Adam Jacobs, and Norm Lewis in this - stellar cast. It is a wonderful story for a musical, timely as well (even though a classic story set in the past, revenge seems to be in the air these days).  Looking forward to see Jacobs in another leading role, especially a dramatic role. Always enjoy Sierra and Norm.

I am surprised that no one else has commented on Monte Cristo. I finally got to it today and had a wonderful time. I thought that this was quite strong and look forward to hearing the score again. Many character driven songs and a solid mix of duets. All the voices, performances and orchestra were splendid.  The costumes were superb as well. It was such a treat. Highly recommended.
