And the Rialto again, years earlier (circa 1947), with a much better marquee.
Here's a vintage shot of the Apollo, Times Square, Lyric and Republic (Victory) Theatre marquees, when all were movie houses. The Apollo and Lyric were torn down to build the Ford Center/Hilton, the Republic is now the New Victory, and the Times Square will perhaps someday by the Mark Ecko store which has been under construction for an eternity.
By the way, if any of the images I've posted do not turn up, try right clicking and hitting "view image" and they should appear. I think one of the Rialto shots is not working...
Thanks for the pics!
Look at all the great marquees and light-up billboards even movies used to have! I wish any of the real movie houses were still around, I've never gotten to see a movie in that way. Although I think the "new" Ziegfield is very awesome.

I've never seen so many theatres in one little area. I wonder how they're all laid out so that they still have enough room for everyone
They varied in capacity and they kind of sat amongst each other like a jigsaw.
The current Ziegfeld Theatre is an imposter. Accept no substitutes. The real Ziegfeld stood on Sixth Avenue at the corner of 54th Street, but was torn down in 1966 to make way for... an office building. The current movie theatre is about half way up the block from where the legit Ziegfeld (original home of Show Boat, Brigadoon, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Kismet) once stood.
The spectacular mural walls in the Ziegfeld
Another view of the interior.
Wow!
That is beautiful.
I am all for capitalism and free enterprise, I think it is the backbone of the country, Broadway would not exist without it, etc.
But I don't understand how anyone would be able to tear something that beautiful down.
"The current Ziegfeld Theatre is an imposter. Accept no substitutes."
That may be true, but right now a substitute is the best we have.

Its not even a 'theatre' so it doesnt count at all!
I'm sorry for bumping without comment, but I don't wish for this thread to die just yet.
a little off-topic, but has anyone seen "I Am Legend"? It shows us a glimpse of what TKTS is about to become!

I didn't noticed TKTS but I did notice that the Palace Theater had both Lestat and Legally Blonde marquees up.

That July 2006 picture is pretty sad.
Yeah I was laughing when I saw the Palace with the Legally Blonde and Lestat marquees. I think that was my favorite part of the movie! But wow those theatres were beyond beautiful!
Just came across this and the lovely images that are compiled in here.
I wish Broadway could be back to those gorgeous marquees. Each one is so unique and different. I hate all these crappy metal boring structures. Why would they tear down the gorgeous and unique Music Box marquee only to replace it with that awful metal box one?
love the threads like this, please keep them going.
@Ripped Man are talking about marquees like the Walter Kerr, which i think any tennant has to be carful in picking their Marquee Artwork because it can make it seem tacky
I saw "Da" at that theatre in 1979. Brian Keith had replaced Barbard Hughes and he wasn't particularly good but I did enjoy the play.
I remember thinking that the theatre was smaller than I'd expected, but then the only other BW theatre I'd been in at that point was the Uris (now Gershwin), which is huge. It seemed a bit run down at that point but had a lot of character and "ambience". As a new theater goer, I really got a sense that a lot of theater history had happened in that place, which made the experience all the more memorable. And I recall that marquee right there by the square. It was very exciting to me and I was very disappointed when it was torn down only 2 years later.
