So I happened to be on the IBDB page of director/choreographer Graciela Daniele, and noticed that she's been nominated for 10 Tonys and never won once. It made me wonder if there are any other individuals (not shows like The Scottsboro Boys) who have been nominated even more than 10 times and still never won. Anyone know?
Kelli O'Hara was nominated 5 or 6 times before she won for The King and I.
That would be less than 10.

Wow, 10 is a lot. I can't think of any. Lots of people have 5 or 6 with no wins.
Thank you for helping me count, Dramamama.
It is still a large amount of nominations without a win.

The OP specifically asked for 10 or more, though.

Costume designer Jane Greenwood, who won a lifetime achievement award in 2014, has been nominated for best costume design 18 times and never won.

Looks like you need more help with reading though.

Did my post harm anyone? Did I ruin anyone's day with my post? Is anyone going to be negatively impacted by my post?
No. So pipe down.

An individual having 10 Tony nominations is an amazing achievement in it self though. The length of time that this person has "stayed on top" Is amazing. Given the choice I think I would prefer to have the longevity and versatility of career that led to ten nominations than peaking with 1 win but then never reaching near that level of achievement again which happens to some people.

Realize that he has less than Graciela, but it's strange Stephen Schwartz never won.

^ He got an honorary Tony recently though.
Time for Graciela Daniele's honorary Tony!
It would have been nice if Graciela Daniele received a Tony nomination (and a win, too, for historical purposes considering her numerous collaborations with Kander and Ebb and Chita) for The Visit last season. There isn't one nominee in that category, though, that I would bump out to make room for her. The Visit didn't have a lot of choreography, but the pas de deux during "Love and Love Alone" was perhaps the most emotionally resonant dance for me all season.
Scott Ellis has been nominated for directing seven times, and still has yet to win.

...and in my mind he's one of the best directors around today.

the op asked for ten or more times. not seven
Thanks for your responses, everybody! Indeed, the goal of this thread was to figure out which individual has the MOST Tony losses without a win. We can name examples of people with lots of Tony losses until the cows come home, but I did want to know if anybody had more than Graciela Daniele.
Thanks henrikegerman for mentioning Jane Greenwood. 18 losses and no wins seems to be the one to beat in this thread (though I guess a lifetime achievement award is a bit of asterisk
 )
I agree that Daniele should also get a lifetime achievement award!

You shock me, dmama. You know perfectly well that it is "fewer than 10" not "less"!
I can only assume you are unnerved that winter has finally arrived, even if only South of you.
Bumping this thread because now Jane Greenwood has won a Tony for The Little Foxes. Could Graciela Daniele (10 noms, no wins) now be the most Tony-nominated individual without a win? It feels like there probably some other designers or directors out there who might have her beat, but I wouldn't know where to begin finding that out. Now that it's been close to 2 years since I originally posted this, can anyone else think of others?
