Holy god. I just saw Indecent today and it was just the most stunning piece of theater. I almost couldn't catch my breath at the end.

The house was not full at all. I wish more people would go see it. It almost plays like a musical—there is a lot of music and gorgeous singing throughout. I bought my ticket through TodayTix and got front row, center, mezz.

Allow me to add a second pick and say The Play That Goes Wrong. I think it's gut-bustingly funny and should be one of the hottest tickets.

I don't know if I'd necessarily call it "overlooked," because it had a lot of buzz...albeit not terribly positive buzz...but AMELIE really didn't deserve all that hate it got. I thought it was a flawed but very solid show, though I understand that fans of the original movie lamented the lost tone of the source material.

Also, I like the score the more I listen to it. It's got a lot of heart.

Unrelated but I too wish that Corbin Bleu could've gotten more recognition for Holiday Inn! He completely stole that show.

I agree with Amelie. It wasn't a perfect show and much could've been rewritten but it was nowhere near the worst thing this season. It deserved a longer life. I really liked the score and thought Phillippa was wonderful.

Significant Other. Beyond Gideon Glick's terrific performance, I think that play was a lot smarter than people give it credit for. 

It is also a shame that Indecent isn't selling well and got sort of ignored by the Tonys. I've seen all four Best Play nominees now, and while I expect Oslo to win, as far as I'm concerned it should be between Indecent and A Doll's House, Part 2.

Will Eno’s WAKEY, WAKEY at Signature. It was a real knockout, and I barely heard anyone talk about it.

Three shows.

1) In Transit

The music wasn't just good and catchy, it was a masterpiece in a cappella and complexity. All the actors were singing virtually the entire show and most were truly excellent. The score and vocal arrangements deserved more love, and I had a smile on my face pretty much the entire show.

2) Bandstand

It's powerful, it stars two sensational leads in Cott and Osnes, and tells an original story with original music. Any other year, I think this show would've been a frontrunner for the Tony, but it's a packed year and they opened so late.

3) The Play That Goes Wrong

Legit don't think I've ever laughed harder. The entire house was hysterical when I saw it, just couldn't get passed the dramas when it came time for Tony voting. And that will hurt ticket sales.

Amélie and Bandstand. While Amélie had its flaws, Pippa was stellar and the music I generally enjoyed. Bandstand is a good story with Cott and Osnes giving brilliant performances which any other year I think would have easily garnered Tony acting Noms.

If off-Broadway counts, I'd throw in Party People and Underground Railroad Game. Excellent, provocative shows that I found pretty enthralling, especially the latter.

I have to agree that the most underrated shows of the year were Significant Other and Indecent. Yes, both transferred to Broadway on strong reviews, but neither got their fair shake as far as I'm concerned. Significant Other was a stronger play than reviews gave it credit for, and that Gideon Glick was left out of the line-up of Best Actors at the Tonys is absurd. I've seen all the nominees but Kline so far, and I believe Glick did stronger work than any of them (not that the others, particularly Arndt, were bad; they simply weren't as great). And to me, Indecent is the play of the year. It's astonishingly beautiful, deeply theatrical, and the best written new play of the season. Oslo, Sweat, and A Doll's House Part 2 were all wonderful in their own ways, but to me Indecent surpassed them in writing, direction, and design. It's simply put the closest I felt to theatrical perfection this year on or off-Broadway, play or musical. And I wish so badly that it was considered the front-runner for the Best Play Tony and that Richard Topol had gotten a nomination. Again, I think his performance is stronger than any of the actual nominees in the Featured Actor category (and again, not that I think any of them were bad).

I agree with all who have said Indecent (it was incredibly powerful, and I think Taichman should win director).

On the musical side, I have to put in a good word for Bronx Tale. True, it didn't do anything groundbreaking, but it was a good old fashioned musical that really delivered (for me, anyway). It also features Menken's best score in years (he deserved a nom for this over his win for Newsies). And Nick Cordero was fantastic as Sonny- he was robbed of a featured actor nomination.

In Transit is why I think there should be a vocal arranging Tony.... this obviously took it to a new level, but I think it's an often overlooked art even though it can define so much of the music of a show. 

But I digress. I'll put in a vote for Bandstand and The Play That Goes Wrong. Both had their flaws, but I think they were really entertaining and wish they were talked about more. The Bandstand score in particular is underrated - there are some melodies that stick in my head in the good way, and it's sung and played so well in the show.
