I love Oklahoma. It's one of my favorite shows. While its score may seem unimaginative now, put it into perspective. Oklahoma was a groundreaking and unique show of its day and stretched the boudaries of musical theatre. It was innovative in its approach and staging and paved the way for Broadway's golden age. It put Rodgers and Hammerstein on the map as a team to beat and no other R&H musical was as innovative and successful as Oklahoma.

Notre Dame de Paris - It was indeed awful, but then, it was really only overrated in Europe. It didn't even survive Vegas in the US. What's worse than that?
Les Miserables - You've got to be kidding. Victor Hugo's classic novel of human redemption is "corny"? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Titanic - Good subject, one of Broadway's more gorgeous scores, and unlike the film, each character was based on actual passengers. A Beautifully written and conceived cross-section of the various classes aboard the most famous of all disaster tales. I understood people's problems with the uneven staging, but it was one of the most moving shows I have ever seen.

So my dear you think you can get to Broadway. Well, let me tell you something. Broadway has no room for people like you. Not the Broadway I know. My Broadway takes people like you and eats them up and spits them out. My Broadway is the Broadway of Merman, and Martin, and Fontaine, and if you think you can build yourself up by knocking other people down... ...GOOD LUCK... Seinfeld
If you ever saw the original cast of Rent, you would understand why it's not overrated. The show is brilliant, but the current cast is overrated.
Hairspray is fun, energetic, funny, with a witty toe-tapping score that is both fresh and new while being a tribute to the old-fashioned musical comedies. What's not to like?
Babes in Arms - I've often wondered the same thing. Other than a couple of hit songs, the show really has little to offer. But then, I don't think it was ever really rated that highly to begin with, so it can't really qualify as being "overrated".

Thoroughly Modern Millie. I've heard people rave about the show like it was one of the greatest things ever. I saw it, and almost fell asleep, and was very close to leaving (though I'd feel really bad leaving a show, so I didn't), but I didn't like this show one bit.
Shows like the Producers and Hairspray are wonderful shows that everyone wants to see - that's why they seem overrated. But those shows are worth it, in my opinion, if you want to see something great. Mamma Mia, on the other hand, is only about the Abba music (with a loose plot), when you could just pop the CD into your CD player.

I previously mentioned Mamma Mia!, but thanks guys for reminding how overrated Lion King was also. True it's such a spectacle...but after the opening "Circle of Life" it seriously goes downhill. And although I love kids, the roles they play as Young Simba and Nala are just so...WHINY! Eeek! :)
I agree that LION KING palls after the staging novelty wears off during the performance. For all the praise I have seen on this board, I think AIDA is also overrated.
And yes I think Les Mis was way overrated, the pathos was coming out of my ears after that 3hrs of 'cry people cry! isn't this sad??! CRY' -bulls**t. Read the book - liked it, saw the show - hated it.
