Moulin Rouge/Aaron Tveit

I know its miles away from Broadway but what are your thoughts on the chances that Aaron Tveit sticking with Moulin Rouge until the Broadway Bow. I've said before I'd love to see him in this role.

I've personally never really understood the fuss over Aaron Tveit, but somehow him being in this is still kind of a dream casting. Maybe it's a commercial thing. I'm more there for Alex Timbers, Karen Olivo, and the story/spectacle from the film.

I haven't heard of him doing anything in the long term, so I'm thinking his schedule would allow a Broadway transfer as well. (Unless they decide to move forward with "Company" or he gets Fiyero in the "Wicked" movie, but I haven't heard anything as of yet.) The project is so huge and buzzy, I don't think they'd get as big a star as Aaron Tveit for the early stages then decide there was someone better down the road. But who knows.

I think unless something huge one up for him, like a larger TV role than his more recent one or another film, than I think he'll stick with it. I don't think he's totally wrong for this, but he's not my ideal Christian either. The Satine/Christian dynamic reminds me a lot of say, Hercules and Meg. It's not the usual romantic relationship usually seen in fiction, it's flipped on it's head. The whip smart, wise cracking, yet jaded female love interest (which I daresay Olivo has in spades) and the sweet, more innocent male love interest who makes his female counterpart see that yes, someone can legit love her and not every man is out to hurt her. Tveit doesn't really strike me as that type. But I'm not about to say no to him in this regardless.

You've hit the nail on the head. Christian has kind of a doe-eyed quality and Aaron Tveit isn't exactly that. I think it'd be neat to see him try it out though. If they are sticking with these actors maybe they'll adjust the couple dynamic in the stage adaptation to write to their strengths.

There's the term I was looking for. Doe eyed. When the usual "female is the 'feeler'/doe eyed one" and the male is the "hard nut, 'thinker' and jaded" type of dynamic we see all the damn time, is flipped on it's head and done well, I LOVE it, because it's almost rare thing to see, because I relate to those gals a **** ton. I don't know why I'm a sucker for that dynamic, I just am.

If you ask me, I think they should just get Ewan McGregor to reprise his role. Yeah, he's a bit long in the tooth, but he still looks excellent, and he was so perfect for that part. Plus he's a bankable name! 

I think Jordan is a better fit than Tveit, but as long as we're dreamcasting, I think we could think even more doe-eyed. First person I thought of was Isaac Powell, but I bet there are others.

Yeah, Aaron's got his wheelhouse that he's fantastic in (Noble, dangerous, cocky, sexy, even pathos) but I dare say he's never been great at vulnerable. Which is very necessary for Christian, the classic bleeding heart. 

Still, I confess I'm really excited to see what he does with it? The El Tango De Roxanne should be fantastic.

Jeremy Jordan? Doe eyed? What planet is he doe eyed on? I mean, it seems they went for the "powerhouse vocals/sing the crap out of it" so both guys certainly fulfill that, but I find find Jeremy less capable of doe eyes than Aaron. I like Jeremy ok, but he's still a one trick pony of dark, broody, and moody. Aaron has the sweet look at least, but not the persona, and Jeremy has neither sweet look nor sweet persona. But maybe this will push Aaron in a new direction.

Very little will stop me from seeing this show since I love the movie so much, but I found that music video to be laughably cheesy with underwhelming vocals and a kind of hollow arrangement? Strange.

Incredibly cheesy and kinda boring. He sings well but just doesn't do it for me.  They could have made so many interesting casting decisions, and went the safe route instead.  And what's with his hair?

This is my favorite movie, and I've been wanting to see it brought to the stage for years now, but that video killed a lot of the hope I have for this production. I really don't think he's right for the part, and his vocals plus his look for the video, assuming it's similar to what his costume/hair on stage will be, were just so underwhelming. I don't think they'll recast before Broadway, but I they really should.

It was... not terrible?

Like there are no big things I would point to and say "This makes it awful" (Of course I could nitpick). It's serviceable.

It also lacks anything that makes moving, either through connection, emotion, or soaring vocals. 

Like he sang the music. That is the music. It is an uninspiring arrangement that lacks any moments of "YES" and heart swelling, but I can't say there's anything incorrect about it. The acting is alright, again nothing incorrect but nothing moving.

He looks way too old for Christian though. It must be the hair/makeup/costume or something, it's the first time I've looked at Aaron and thought "you look old"

You guys, it's a music video. There's literally nothing in there to contextualize how he'll play the song when he's actually doing a performance of the show, with other characters in the thick of the plot. He sounded beautiful, and that's all I wanted to hear from a music video.

I'm still most eager to hear/see Olivo as Satine, as that role is the real heart of this beast.

I do hope you're right. Moulin Rouge is a favourite of mine and despite a few reservations I am really hoping to love this. As long as they don't wreck it, I'll round up. The heart of Moulin Rouge can survive a few flaws

They can't have it both ways: either the video is meant to represent the show- in which the other posters are perfectly entitled to judge this new production- or it's entirely irrelevant, in which case, why post it on this website?

Of course we are meant to make positive connotations from this clip.

Trouble is, some of us are unimpressed.

It's definitely just a tease, but as far as official first impressions go, since this is the show's first real bit of marketing to the public, it's a pretty bland first impression, and this show needs to be anything but that.
