I found this article about Sunset Boulevard:
I think Meryl Streep could work well as Norma Desmond.

James Marsden would have made an awesome Fiyero...about ten years ago. People...these kids are at a University. James Marsden is great, but he couldn't pass for a college kid in a million years. Hell, he could barely pass for a graduate student.
I personally think Adams plays too old (though Hathaway's age seems perfect) for the role, but whatever.

No need for an unknown to play Elphaba when you have Anne Hathaway, a hot Hollywood star who could do wonders with the role.
Would love to see Kristen Bell involved, but Amy Adams is a much bigger name and she could do the role justice.
Joel Grey and Liza Minnelli for the Wizard and Morrible. Get whoever for Fiyero, it's a crappy role anyways.
I really hope the FOLLIES movie does happen.

PLEASE I hope Tim Burton does not go ANYWHERE near Into the Woods. Seriously, he'd ruin it. He'd cast that Helena chick as the witch or baker's Wife and claim she auditioned and got the part on her own merit. Please, really, please don't. hehe

For a "Wicked" movie, they'll get bigger movie names for Morrible and the Wizard.
I don't see Liza as Morrible, but I do think they'll get solid "film names" for that role, as well as the Wizard.
Morrible:
Glenn Close
Emma Thompson
Helen Mirren
Annette Benning
Angelica Huston
Judi Dench
The Wizard:
Kevin Spacey
Christopher Walken
Tom Hanks
Geoffrey Rush
Jim Broadbent

"I found this article about Sunset Boulevard:

I think people are forgetting how old Norma Desmond really is. She is only 50. While Meryl is only 59 now, if filming is not going to be commencing soon, which it isn't, well, she's not getting any younger. Same goes for Glenn Close, and Babs (who I can not possibly see in that role).
I personally think Sunset is going to follow in the Evita, Phantom mode and be in development limbo for a couple decades before finally getting put on film.
I personally have always thought that Miss Saigon would work very well as a movie. It always had a very cinematic feel about it to me. The opportunities for the cinematography alone are very exciting.

I realize that a movie version of Wicked is something that many here are very excited about so I certainly do not want to dash any hopes...but...
Three weeks ago I attended a book signing by "Wicked" author Gregory Maguire. He was in Atlanta promoting his new book "A Lion Among Men" and was speaking at Outwrite bookstore.
He was asked the question about a movie version of "Wicked." His reply was: "Not anytime soon. Paramount does not want to kill the goose that laid the golden egg." The show is so profitable now that they are not going to move towards a movie version until profits begin to wane.
He also mentioned that the rights to a non-musical version are held separately and he envisions a dramatic version (as perhaps a TV miniseries) which sticks closer to the original book sometime in the future.

Posted: 11/15/08 at 9:40pmWicked WAS originally planed as a made for TV movie. And as much as I love me some Wicked and do at some point hope for a silver screen version I do agree that doing that any time soon would be a bad move. But I would LOVE something based more closely on the book.

i agree! i love the book, and since the musical is def different, i would love a movie version soon for the book.
I mean, the first 100 pages were basically trimmed down to 4 minutes of the opening song lol

I honestly think Amy Adams would be perfect as Glinda for a "Hollywoodized" Wicked movie. Anne Hathaway....ummm...love her to death but CAN NOT see her as Elphaba. I think she'd be a great Nessarose, however. Oh! What if they just DON'T make a Wicked movie? That'd solve everything, eh?

"What if they just DON'T make a Wicked movie? That'd solve everything, eh?" I totally agree with you elphabelle07!
It would make sense, although these big movie studios don't care about the translation from stage to screen (one could argue Rent) It all omes down to casting who will bring in the most money
I remember years ago in the mid-to late '90's a tv version of Mame with Cher was planned. Also, a new Peter Pan is in the works by the guys who did Hairspray and Chicago

I'm with you there andrewcomp
Am I the only one that doesn't really trust that there is a Wicked movie soon. It's seems like it is always going to happen and it never does.

i personally see the 'Wicked' movie like film of 'Dreamgirls'.
When the two shows premiered on Broadway, they was a smash hit. The casts were awesome, their was a major song you loved (And I Am Telling You/Defying Gravity). The was a "new" star on Broadway (Jennifer Holiday/Idina Menzel). And the show caught the interest of millions.
Then 20 years later of "wishing and hoping" a film finally came out. (I won't comment on how the film was made) But fan were waiting and they got their "big, old fashioned" movie musical.
We should wait, so we cam make the best possible movie out there!

There was a musical that Disney was going to make of Rapunzel, with Kristen Chenoweth. It was, I believe, scheduled for 2008 or 2009. I followed it for a while in the data base, but gave up after a year or so. This was back in 2005. They had a lot of artwork on the web.
Anyone know what happened to it, other than it obviously isn't going to be.

Sigh. Just rename the "Wicked movie thread" already.
On the topic of other musicals, didn't Jeff Marx announce that an Avenue Q movie was in development? Still methinks that is a bad idea, but...

Besty, I just thought Liza should play Morrible because of the Judy Garland connection. She would obviously camp it up and not really be evil, but still, just something neat and she has the chemistry with Joel Grey.
I know Grey is not a name but that always bothers me, I can't believe he won an Oscar for CABARET and that was really about it. He was so great in that film.

"actually, i think an avenue q movie would be cool.. honestly, with it being so simple (set wise and all) i think they could do a lot with it!"
I think the set being so simple is exactly the reason Ave Q would not work as a film. Most adaptations from stage to screen expand the action to take place in multiple locations so as not to bore an audience used to more stimuli. Ave Q may work as a TV series, as it was originally conceived, because of its simplicity set-wise, but as a film that element of it would probably be boring.

^Bingo. The musical never steps outside the street in the first act (though one could reroute the wedding scene to Central Park or a church), and only a few scenes in act two take place in Manhattan. A lot of it is based on the lyrics of the songs, and there's very little visual you can do with the numbers. Fantasies Come True and There Is Life Outside Your Apartment are the only ones I can think of that would look neat on film. Some can have visual add-ons like "Racist" and "Porn", but it would be cheesy in a feature film and plus millions of YouTube videos have done it better. The Sesame Street theme would be dumped, of course, in favor of a Muppet movie vibe (if they're smart). And that would include cutting a TON of songs.
I'm sorry, but it just isn't a good idea. I can't see why they don't just take up Comedy Central's offer from 2004 and produce the TV show?!...
