I second the Big Fish nomination . . .
or basically anything Tim Burton.
(side note- anyone else psyched for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?)
I think The Hours could make a nice play
Just a stab....but I think a Gangs of New York Musical would kinda be like Les Miserables

My top two movie to musical picks would have to be:
- Pirates of the Carribean
- The Pianist
See Ya!
Phantom05
anaconda..
i would kill to see that snake sing on stage.
Down With Love practically is a musical w/o songs! It needs to be a Birdie/Hairspray type of thing - the movie soundtrack is excellent!
Dances with Wolves could be a good musical.
"Oklahoma Annie!" would be interesting... story of a woman who cleans up the violence in her small western community... Updated On: 2/13/05 at 01:14 AM
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Legally Blonde
Hairspray
Cry-Baby
Spamalot
Wedding Singer
Lion King
Little Mermaid
BATB
Young Frankenstein
Mary Poppins
The Producers
Shrek
Any of these could potentially be adapted for the stage, IMHO
Nice. Very clever.
Clueless IS being adapted by the composer of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, being produced by the Weislers. Fo' real, yo.
Akiva
"Inch by Inch"
"The Pizza Boy Delivers"
"The Bigger the Better"
Well, you get the idea .........

Now, as someone who thinks that the lack of originality on Broadway is disgusting, It's hard to imagine an adaptation that I would actually enjoy.
Revivals like South Pacific and Sunday in the Park making comments on art and politics seem to foil a lack of commentary and indeed "daring" in modern musicals. We're in a climate of fantasy and escapism - perhaps it's a product of our current administration. I guess I've never been a fan of escapism. I want theater - even musical theater - to challenge me...not just make me forget.
Anyway, here goes nothing:
- Pan's Labyrinth
- Road to Perdition
- Hudsucker Proxy
I'll do some more thinking.
I've said it once, I'll say it again: Labyrinth, based on the movie with David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly.
Also, The Princess Bride, 9 to 5 (which is being made!).
Under the Tuscan Sun
Matilda
And for tazber we could do:
All about Eve
Miracle on 34th St
Gone with the Wind
Breakfast at Tiffany's
8 1/2
Ninotchka
The Captain's Paradise
Smiles of a Summer Night
La Femme du Boulanger
The Apartment
42nd Street
The Quiet Man
The Shop around the Corner
...

BIG FISH and HUDSUCKER PROXY are both great ideas and would be fun for designers too...I worry that a stage version of MOULIN ROUGE (at least the Baz version) wouldn't be able to capture the technical wizardy of the film and would disappoint.
My choice would be THE LOVE GOD, an old Don Knotts movie.
Add Rebecca to tazber's list...
<----How about "What A Way To Go"
Mean Girls would be so much fun but it would have to have a crazy mad terrific ending.

I have always thought HeartBreakers would be great fun onstage. I know it's on MGM's to-do list, but I just thought I'd say I agree!
Back to the Future
Back to the Future Part II
Zoolander.
It's built like a musical, there are certain moments that practically sing in and of themselves.
-Obviously the gasoline fight.
-A funny ballad of loss after his friends die.
-Miners doing an ensemble number when he goes to find his parents.
-Dance fighting.
-Mugatu could sing a bunch of queeny power ballads.
-The orgy could be a hilarious intepretive dance.
ZOOLANDER THE MUSICAL!
MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Yes! I have so many friends who would kill to be involved in a production of N.B.C. - me included.
I am really surpised it hasn't been done.
I'm sure Elfman could buff up the score easily enough - and if edward gorey's dracula found its way to the stage, then it's about time Burton did, as well.
