re: Munk revisits FIDDLER w/ Rosie

The show closes in January. I myself saw Fiddler when it first came out last year. I saw Alfred Molina's understudy which I heard was better than him. My friend and I wanted to see Harvey do the show and have tixs for 11/19. I saw Fiddler the movie about 15 times so my favorite Tevye is Topol.

What a generous-spirited review.

I had little interest in revisiting FIDDLER. And then in came Harvey, and I became far more curious. And then, when they added Rosie, I bought a ticket for mid-October. Reduced price, of course, but it just seems unmissable.

What your review reminded us: these two stars are bigger than life personalities who are savvy enough to take such a high stakes gig very, very seriously. I've no doubt that they are working hard, separately and together. As for O'Donnell, people forget that, prior to the talk show, she was a very respectable, totally natural screen actress. Her film work consistently demonstrates an easy way with creating real moments. I think she now is seen as a power broker/diva-b---tch, with her performing skills completely overshadowed. She's reinventing herself yet again, and why not?

Thank you for the lovely review. I too thought this production of FIDDLER, from a staging standpoint at least, was under-rated. My curiosity is certainly peaked with the addition of Rosie O'Donnell.

I'm glad to hear it - you should all check her out. This production cannot be missed by anyone.

i'm a big nancy opel fan (she was the first EVITA i ever saw back in the day) and have seen her in many other things and i thought she was gawd-awful in this role. fake. small. effortful. forgettable. community theater. i was so disappointed.
great to hear that rosie is fitting in. is that ham and cheese motel the tailor still there--the one that does 16 takes for everything? oy. wanted to smack him HARD. his song was nice though.

No, he's long gone and the guy that's in now is much better.

Agreed about Nancy Opel - that role has such potential. However, when I saw her last night, she was a lot better than the first time.

Does anyone know if the show still has student rush available or have they gotten rid of that now that Rosie has joined the cast?

re: Munk revisits FIDDLER w/ Rosie

This production is already on tour...in a non-equity tour that's not going to major cities (to avoid Union picketing)

The non-Equity tour that is out is not a copy of the current Broadway production like the RENT tour is.

Barlandg--Re Nancy Opel's EVITA: I didn't know anyone else had the same reaction. I remember taking out of town guests, who couldn't wait to see the show. She was just bizarre, grinning inappropriately, looking like MTM on the old Dick Van Dyke show in the brown wig, and mugging through the show. She played it like "Eva Peron -- that crazy Argentine cut up!" I suppose she's a talented enough singer, but I remember being startled that she was Hal Prince's idea of the part. Casting sometimes mystifies me.

But then, such is the biz. She doesn't need our vote, since she went on to great aclaim in the David Ives show, and URINETOWN. I have friends who felt her work in the Ives ALL IN THE TIMING was beyond hysterical. (I didn't, but then, that show wasn't all that funny to me either).

i was very very young when i saw her in EVITA and i was actually thrilled by the production and the music. i loved her, actually -- but i don't think i understood anything about that role and that show until i got older. i remember the tango gave me chills. i was just on the edge of my seat at the big sounds. and, i was a little girl in st. louis and she was from kansas city -- unlike the other stars of tours i'd seen who were famous tv stars & who were nothing like me.

Rosie has a link to BWW in her blog, and knowing what an internet/e-mail/blog person she is, I am willing to bet she's read through your awesome review Munk.

That would be awesome - she deserves to hear that theatre fans think she's doing an amazing job.

I'm surprised to hear what you said about Graff..I thought she stood out among the performers as one of the strongest.

Weird - I thought she was utterly terrible.

re: Munk revisits FIDDLER w/ Rosie

Great review, Munk!

I agree with your comments about the show. It is a phenomenal revival. I really and truly enjoyed it thoroughly...wasn't a fan of the performances, though (the originals for the revival)...Molina was simply alright, making a good Tevye, but not a great one...Graff was not very good as Golde, she simply didnt have the correct grasp of the character...and worst of all, (shockingly) was Nancy Opel who was an awful, unfunny, cloying Yente. Opel was absolutley breahtaking and hysterical in Urinetown (one of the most underrated performances Ive ever seen and certainly the most underrated show & performance of that year), but she just didn't work here...the production, however, almost makes up for all of that. I'd give the revival (original 2004 cast) three stars, probably. I'd love to go back to see Rosie and Harvey, though. re: Munk revisits FIDDLER w/ Rosie
