Couldn't get the best picture on my iPhone. But the screen stays the same unlike Mary Poppins LED marquee. There is a rippling effect on the Shubert Organization logo. Is this gonna start a new trend?

Posted: 10/2/12 at 8:10pmI really hate this new trend. I hope others feel this way and speak up to the Shuberts.

Posted: 10/2/12 at 8:11pmIf that find that this "boring" artwork isn't working, it will now cost less to change it. You dont have to pay for the materials, printing cost, or labor to post it on the marquee. Now the only expense is designing the artwork. It's much greener, too. I, for one, am happy about this.

Posted: 10/2/12 at 8:35pmYeah that's what I hate. It won't be exciting now to walk by the marquees and see the new posters and stuff. It's just going to be all these look alike billboards.

Posted: 10/2/12 at 8:56pmMaybe we should go back to gas lamps? C'mon. This particular design is yawn-inducing, but the technology and potential is great. When "The Best Men" cast changed I thought "What a pain to change all those posters and marquees".

It looks like crap, plain and simple. Soon we'll be seeing the pricing up on the billboards like the TVs in the lobby.

It's not about the effort, it's about the cost.
Shows should also do this with their cast boards in the lobby.

Posted: 10/2/12 at 9:52pmI can't say I'm a fan of it, but I understand why they did it. Sure, it may not take the crew that long to change the marquee. But, it does cost money. I am not sure if that's paid for by the owner of the theatre (in this case, the Shuberts) or the producers of the show. But, it's still money being spent. I think that they are being pennywise and pound foolish, because if they do this with the new marquee for The Golden (or their other theatres) then they are getting rid of the beauty that is the traditional Broadway marquee.

I just love seeing the different marquees and posters. Like how the Imperial has that little box above of it, or how the Broadway is kind of retro. It will be a shame when they're all the same.
But at the same time, this new look won't work with all the current marquees, so then some of them will look LED and some will be old? That'll just be weird looking.

Depressing. It was unique and now it's bland. I took this photo with my iPhone.

Okay, I just want to frame the debate here a bit more clearly. The date isn't so much over the LED as it is about the loss of the Music Box logo.
The LED medium ultimately causes no change in show art. It is still created the same way.. It will just be displayed via LED rather than being print and installed in the more traditional way.
The aesthetic debate here is in the removal of the Music Box logo.. that has NOTHING to do with the LED marquees. an LED marquee could have been installed and the Music Box logo retained.. and this doesn't mean that the logos of all theatres will be removed. that is ridiculous. LED can be built and manufactured to fit in with any marquee design currently on Broadway.. the decision to remove the Music Box logo is an entirely different decision and debate...
Yes, it would have been nice for them to have left that on the building. Sad to say, I figured it would be removed long ago since they just haven't been maintaining it really.
