The Shucked team is clearly smoking a bit too much of their own corn.
How do you not let Alex, the Tony-nominated(-and-now-winning), scene-stealing, mid-show-standing-ovation-earning, non-binary star of your show sing at least the latter half of her enormous roof-raising song? That should have been her Jennifer Holliday or Joaquina Kalukango moment with the audience on their feet, screaming praise for her momentous turn playing a full-out female role and tearing it up every night.
They couldn't possibly have made a worse choice than to sandwich a snippet of the song in the middle, and also they haphazardly chopped it up in such a way that it threw Alex off and led to some pitch problems. She clearly got a bit lost in the sloppy remix of it all.
Just a total missed opportunity for a moment that should have celebrated not only the performer but the entire cultural shift her nomination (and win) represents. And it surely would have gotten audiences' attention. I'm baffled by it. What a whiff! Boooooooo!
