I was just thinking about shows that have leading gay charachters, only a few crossed my mind:
Taboo
Rent
Bombay Dreams
Kiss of the Spider Woman
La Cage
any others that come to mind?
A New Brain -- I think one of the most realistic and non-stereotyped potrayals to date.

A Chorus Line

Going way back - LADY IN THE DARK - the character of Randall (originated by Danny Kaye) is quite flamboyant, and implicitly gay, though they never *actually* say it (it was the 1940's, after all).

I can't believe that FALSETTOS wasn't mention earlier...Luckily we have MEF!!! It was so groundbreaking when MARCH OF THE FALSETTOS opened in 1982! Gotta love William Finn!

"Dance A Little Closer" had two supporting characters who were gay lovers . A young Brent Barrett was one of them and they sang as they skated together on stage. The song was aptly titled, "Why Don't They Leave Us Alone!".
THE LAST SESSION
THE BIG VOICE: GOD OR MERMAN?
(Two of my faves. Heh.)
I wouldn't say the gay characters in RENT are leading as much as they are supporting plot devices.
Altar Boyz (not OPENLY gay, but, come on! Even subtext counts)
The rest I thought of have already been mentioned.
The Producers...even though I guess Roger De Bris and Carmen Ghia are supporting role rather than leads.
A Man of No Importance
thanks chicagoplayer.... yeah, don't forget the BRILLIANT In Trousers!
