I was just thinking about shows that have leading gay charachters, only a few crossed my mind:
Taboo
Rent
Bombay Dreams
Kiss of the Spider Woman
La Cage
any others that come to mind?

A New Brain -- I think one of the most realistic and non-stereotyped potrayals to date.

Posted: 2/14/06 at 6:59amGoing way back - LADY IN THE DARK - the character of Randall (originated by Danny Kaye) is quite flamboyant, and implicitly gay, though they never *actually* say it (it was the 1940's, after all).

Posted: 2/14/06 at 10:59am"Dance A Little Closer" had two supporting characters who were gay lovers . A young Brent Barrett was one of them and they sang as they skated together on stage. The song was aptly titled, "Why Don't They Leave Us Alone!".

I wouldn't say the gay characters in RENT are leading as much as they are supporting plot devices.
