Per Google, Paul Dano is 5'11, too tall for a Munchkin, though I suppose with CGI they could make it happen. How about Daniel Radcliffe, 5'5?

As a fan of Ms. Ashford I have to admit that casting her opposite a 24 year old Elphaba would only augment the almost 10 year age difference between the two - - - especially on a movie theater screen.
Also, Ms. Ashford isn't a movie box office draw and I am certain the producers are going to cast the two leads with actresses that have proven box office clout and will attract a wider demographic.
But one can dream!

I hope they go for actors that aren't the obvious movie musical choices. I don't want a Christopher Walken or Meryl Streep anywhere near the Wizard or Morrible. I'd love to see them cast 25-30 actresses for Elphaba and Glinda. I know they're meant to be college aged but the likes of Dove Cameron just looks too young to play the older Glinda even if she can sing the part, she may look more mature by the time of filming.
i still think they should use Kristin, Idina and Norbert as the parents and midwife. You don't even have to put Kristin in the goat makeup for it who says the midwife can't be a witch, munchkin or a human. I'd be more excited to see what kind of look they want for the film. Beauty and the Beast looks great but it looks very pristine and CGI and Stephen Daldry doesn't have much experience with that heavy CGI imagery in his movies.
Into the Woods would probably be a good aesthetic to follow with its use of practical and studio sets.

I hope they cast unknown in the two lead roles(or at least elphaba) and then stunt cast the rest of the character. That's what hairspray did.

Though then again, Joe Mantello didn't really have much experience with bug budget musicals before he was hired to direct the Broadway show. Neither did Rob Marshall before Into the Woods. The most experience he had with visual effects before that was Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Though every film he's ever made has at least been visually stunning.

True, yet we still see films with all star casts like Nine and Rock of Ages flop. I'm sure some would argue the quality of those films, but even bad movies like Transformers still make billions of dollars worldwide while great movies like Steve Jobs flop.
I'm not a fan of Grace Randolph, but she once talked about how sometimes, films don't always need stars to sell them. It would take at least one of many things for a studio to greenlit a film. A movie star to headline it (George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio, Denzel Washington), a celebrated filmmaker to direct/produce (Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg), an established brand (Disney Animation, Marvel, Star Wars), or a popular source material (Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, Lord of the Rings).
Though regarding popular source materials, the difference between theatre and books is that the general public tends to have much more access to books than live theatre.

Some of these may seem old for the first act, but the characters really need a mature look for the second act. Also there's makeup and visual effects, just look at what the did to Streep in ITW.
Fiyero - Chris Pine. If his "Dancing Through Life" is half as good as his "Agony", I'm sold. Also I think Fiyero should look older (like someone who's been in college partying for a few years.
The Wizard - John Lithgow. A veteran actor, Tony winner, Emmy winner, Oscar nominee who can handle comedy and drama.
Madame Morrible - Glenn Close. MAKE. THIS. HAPPEN.
Boq - Daniel Radcliffe. That's just perfect casting. He can play dorky and already kinda looks like a Munchkin
Nessarose - Phillipa Soo. Just thinking about her singing "Wicked Witch of the East" sends shivers down my spine.
Doctor Dillamond - John C. Reilly. He could be hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time.
Elphaba's parents and the Midwife in the initial flashback - Idina Menzel, Norbert Leo Butz and Kristin Chenoweth. C'mon, this one is was easy, very much doable and I'm sure they'd be up for it.
G(a)linda - Kristen Bell. Her Frozen live performances convinced me, she has the comedic chops for sure and even though she's 36, she doesn't look a day past 30.
Elphaba - Cynthia Erivo. She's making her way into Hollywood, she'll be in Steve McQueen's (12 Years a Slave) next feature, opposite Viola Davis and is starring in a new Harriet Tubman biopic. A cast like this, with true talent, a mix between relatively well known Broadway performers like Erivo and Soo, Hollywod veterans like Riley, Close and Lithgow. Bell, who's an established TV actress and Pine and Radcliffe, well known to general public with their franchises, is the best option. And everyone on this list is a realistic option with proved singing abilities.
