Cinema Italiano is different than what we have heard, orchestrations wise!!!
That's because what's been leaked to the internet first was the radio/club friendly remix.

Judi Dench's Folies Bergere isn't very good.
So far for me: Cruz, Day Lewis, Ferguson, Kidman and Cotillard do the material justice.
Kidman and Dench not so much.

Posted: 12/3/09 at 4:39pmJudi Dench could stand up on stage and belch and I'd probably love it. Her number is performed beautifully, although the song itself isn't my favorite by any means.

After listening to the entire soundtrack, these are my impressions.
Overture: Sounds great, and looks like it should be visually stunning.
Day-Lewis: 'Guido's Song' is actually one of my favorite tracks. He actually has some vocal ability, and it shows. 'I Can't Make this Movie' works fine.
Cotillard: A vocal standout. She gets the two contrasting pieces to work with, so it helps. 'My Husband Makes Movies' is one of the best tracks.
Cruz: Sings 'A Call from the Vatican' with the right amount of sexiness and vocals. While much of the song is mostly faking the vocals, the end and the final note are fantastic.
Dench: The first half of "Follies Bergere' was PAINFUL. Once the tempo picked up, the song got better. We'll see how it works on film.
Kidman: Actually, I rather enjoy her 'Unusual Way'. The lowered key really works well for her, and she is able to sing it with raw emotion. Another one of my favorite tracks.
Hudson: The actual soundtrack version works better for Hudson, mainly because she does not sound horribly auto-tuned in some sections as she did in the perviously leaked version. Fun song, and she actually has a very good voice.
Fergie: Best vocal on the soundtrack, but I think we all knew that.
Loren: Well, that was different. If it wasn't Loren, I think people would hate that song.

The version of "Cinema Italiano" heard on the site now is the film soundtrack version. The version released earlier (and included on the site before) is the Ron Fair Remix which will also be included on the soundtrack.

Is Lewis not the best recorded Guido, or at least vocally superior to Banderas and Julia?
I think all the recorded Guidos each have their own special qualities. Including Jonathan Pryce and John Diedrich.
Which has me thinking...has Anthony Warlow ever played Guido? I think I'd DIE to hear that!

Personally, I love Dench. I can't wait to see her perform it.
And they definitely handled Cruz not being a great singer incredibly well. It sounds like she's having a ball with the song too.
Very excited.

"DARN I wish I could hear all these songs..my computer is having sound troubles and the only place I can hear these songs in on my ipod touch and that is not supported on the website. If there are other places I can listen to them, please let me know!"
Here is a little secret.
Install Mozilla Firefox as your browser and then the add-on "Download Helper." Use it to download all 12 of the files and then simply change their suffixes to whatever you need and they will play.
Or install Real Player and use it's new "download this file" feature, then burn them to a disk using the build in burner.
I have found that changing .mov to .avi or .mp4 usually works (something the proprietary software manufacturers do not want you to know.
In fact, a DVD is just a series of avi files which have been renamed but will play when opened individually.

Does anyone know at what point in Cinema Italiano Hudson sings the high E?
I believe she mixes a high G in the middle, and belts a D at the end.

None has been announced but it wouldn't surprise me if one is eventually released sometime in early 2010.

I think all of the vocal performances sound terrific, especially for film. Yeah, there's a lot of "auto-tuning" going on (from what I can tell), but I'd rather hear that than a sour note any day. And it's a movie, so everything is mixed, edited, remixed, and "finished." That's the medium. But the end results are impressive all around.
This really makes me wish that Daniel Day-Lewis had played Sweeney Todd in the movie. Wow, he would have been brilliant!
Judi Dench gets no help from a strange orchestration of Folies Bergeres, which sounds like some sort of esoteric, dream/delirium until it finally kicks into gear in the last two choruses. Maybe it works better with the visual, but she seems almost sabotaged here by a meandering, odd musical arrangement.
Same thing with Kate Hudson, although her song fares a lot better than Judi's. The remix has a much stronger approach to the song than the one in the film, though.
It's unfortunate that these two songs suffer from poor orchestrations and uneven interpretations, when just about everything else is so solid musically. I love the Overture and Finale, and pretty much all other orchestrations presented here.

I feel that for Folies Bergere, Marshall conceived LeFleur as more like an emcee and deprived her of any real singing. The number doesn't take off like on the cast recordings. I still find it enjoyable, but to the extent of the others? Not so much. I also miss Necrophorus' patter, but I get why that's cut.
I love the Overture, and I love LOVE the Finale. I think it sounds fantastic, and the mesh of Be Italian/Folies is wonderful. The orchestrations all around, as expected from a movie musical, are great. You can almost always count on that from a movie musical, even if the end result as a whole isn't great.
Overall, I really enjoy the soundtrack. The performances are all very strong, I feel that Fergie sings a definitive "Be Italian", and that Cotillard's "My Husband Makes Movies" is sublime. The only track I don't care for is "Guarda La Luna". Can't wait to see the film.

Best12, I agree that the remix version of "Cinema Italiano" is a lot stronger and much more energetic than the film version. Still, from all the clips of the number that I've seen, I think it works very well in the film though the remix would have been a more interesting version for Marshall to use, IMO. Still, I love the song, it's such a great addition to the NINE score, same as the (IMO) brilliant--or at least brilliantly performed-- "Take It All."
I've only listened to "A Call from the Vatican," "Be Italian," "Cinema Italiano," and "Take It All," and I'm thoroughly impressed by each number. I agree that Fergie's version of "Be Italian" is pretty definitive, I know this is sacrilege but I think I prefer it--or at least consider it as excellent--to Kathi Moss' showstopping version. Fergie's vocals during the number are just out of the world. This is probably Marshall's most unique, interesting, and ultimately genius piece of casting. Who would have thought Fergie could give us a Saraghina for the ages?

I agree that Fergie's is the best of all the recordings of Be Italian, ray. And the best vocal performance in this movie.
And while I'm still partial to Karen Akers' rendition of "My Husband Makes Movies," simply because of the haunting way she sings, "long ago ...", I never thought anyone would grab me quite the same way singing it.
But Marion Cotillard has done it. A beautiful vocal performance, and I love her voice, even if it isn't showy. There is a world of truth in every note. And I much prefer singers who can communicate emotion (the way she can) to singers with better voices who have no ability to "act" and deliver a song.

Posted: 12/12/09 at 5:40pmI think Fergie's rendition of BE ITALIAN is the best recorded version I've heard EVER. She completely made that song her own. Marshall said that at her audition she claimed it. They had to literally hang on to the walls as she blew the roof off with her powerful vocals. They considered no one else after that - the role was hers and the rest is history.

I cannot wait to see "A Call from The Vatican" on screen. Yeah that teaser being shown about is not enough. Penelope does sound like she is having fun.
I too wish "Cinema Italiano" still stayed in the club remix. Kate, who does a good job, also sounds like she is having a blast. Sacrilege to say I want her as Lola in Damn Yankees?
I think DDL in his vocals will work better once you see him in action. "Guido's Song" especially since he is moving all over the place. He does have ability and yet I should not be surprised but I am.
Cotillard, I love her the most. So different in both songs in terms of style but you can hear Luisa's melancholy in both.
Dame Judi, like somebody said before she could do anything and I would like it. Again I want to see how the song works on screen. I will also lend that to Nicole's "Unusual Way" but it was definitely not her best vocal.
