I believe that Butz won over Gad because from what I saw in Catch Me, Butz seriously did some great thought about characterization which made his performance so real. Gad was fantastic and extremely hilarious as Elder Cunningham, yet Gad plays roles like this which made it probably easier for him to act out. "I Believe" that everyone deserved the award :)

I think Norbert won because the Tony's when undecided becomes a popularity contest.

Tony Sheldon or Josh Gad or Andrew Rannels would have been a better choice.
Norbert, a performer I like, did a Tom Hank's rip off job in Catch me if you can then gets rewarded in a popularity contest.

My only real disappointment of the evening.

Norbert Butz:

a) gave a great performance
b) is a true musical comedy star
c) suffered a tremendous loss and went on with the show.

He should have won, and he did. Bravo Norbert!

I don't understand how anybody who saw both the movie and the musical could say Norbert's performance was ripped off from Tom Hanks, but to each their own.

Congrats Norbert! Completely deserved it, imo. He gave an exceptional performance, even seeing the world premiere of the show in Seattle less than a week after his sister was killed. Unbelievable man.

Butz's characterization did not remind me of Hanks' at all. So he was not doing a cheap rip off. In fact, Josh Gad (or Grad or whatever you want to call him) did.

I'm glad he won. Gad didn't deserve it, in my opinion. If I were to pick a Mormon boy to win the award, I would pick Rannells over Gad.

I'm so glad that Norbert got it. I saw both shows this past weekend, and while I definitely thought the Book of Mormon was a much better show, I didn't think that Gad or Rannells were stand-outs in the same way that Norbert was.

I loved both Mormon boys. They split the vote. Nikki's win shows how voters WANTED to vote for Mormon. Very simply that opened up Norbert, who is and always will be one of Broadway's GREAT performers. Like Meryl Streep, even though they might not win, is automatically the BEST whenever they're nominated.
