NY Philharmonic MY FAIR LADY - let the casting begin!

I'm sure I'll probably be one of the few (if not the only one)who thinks this would be a good idea, but what about Laura Benanti?
If not:
Marla Schaffel (I remember someone saying she's played Eliza before; correct me if I'm wrong)
Melissa Errico
I love the idea of Jonathan Pryce as Higgins.

Ha, SueleenGay,
Now you may endure Rath's wrath.
I did get the joke, but thanks for the laugh.

Well, everything Sueleen posts is not meant to be taken seriously either - it's right there in his sig. So there ya go!
And I think Benanti is a good idea - no joke.

I can see how it might seem that she's wrong for the role, but I really think with the right director, a improper street girl could be brought out of her.
I was suprised when I heard how she stretched herself for Marie in Sunday. I think she has the potential to be a great Eliza.

You're right. Rachel does look and often play a lot younger. is she quite right vocally, though? I'm not sure I buy it. I'd kill to see her Mother come around again, though.
I love Marla Shaffel but I'm also uncertain she's quite age-appropriate anymore, looks wise. She'd be good, too, though.
I also think Benanti is a good idea, so long as she doesn't get sick.

Posted: 1/9/07 at 2:20pmYes, Rath, but unlike you I say it upfront. I don't wait until someone takes offense then change my intent by saying, "Jeesh, I was only JOKING! Didn't you get that?"

Usually I don't have to - most people know I'm joking up front.
Anyway, let's not jack this thread, shall we?

Posted: 1/9/07 at 2:29pmNo to Melissa Erico. She couldn't even show up the first time she played the role on Broadway.

Amen, bwaysinger. Her Mother was divine.
If I close my eyes and try to hear her voice as Eliza, I can imagine it. I'd love the opportunity to find out if I'd be right.
Dottie, didn't know Melissa Errico missed perfs the first time around. Was she out a lot? How was she in the role?

Posted: 1/9/07 at 2:41pmMy first choice for Eliza would be Laura Benanti. She has the best soprano on Broadway, IMO, and she is a great actress. Kelli O'Hara would be good too. I saw Jonathan Pryce play Higgins in London and he was excellent. I would love to have the chance to see his performance again. Also, opposite Pryce was Joanna Riding as Eliza and I thought she was incredible, they could bring her over from London also. I would love to see Brent Barrett sing On The Street Where You Live, but eventhough he reads young on stage he still might be too old to cat as Freddie.

Posted: 1/9/07 at 2:46pmThe idea of Laura Benanti in that role excites me so much that I'm going to have to leave this thread now and not come back so that I won't suffer disappointment when it doesn't happen. Best if I just don't think about this. Darn whoever brought it up. Darn you to heck. *g*

Haha, sorry Lea.
I do think Benanti would be a pretty perfect Eliza.
Danny Gurwin as Freddy?

For those saying that Rachel York and Marla Schaffel are too old, I'd point out that 44-year-old Sally Murphy recently played Eliza at the Signature Theatre to much acclaim. Plus, it's a concert staging.
I do like the idea of Erin Davie, though.

Posted: 1/9/07 at 3:23pmRight - there's no reason York CAN'T play it, but if there is someone qualified who's also the correct age range, why wouldn't we want to see them in the part?

(Just to let ya know I'm not all to familiar with the show. I have only seen the movie and i haven't seen it in a while...)
But, I want either Lithgow or Pryce for Higgins and I want Bob Hoskins for Eliza's dad (I forgot the name.)

If you've seen the movie you've seen the show. It is a very close approximation of the stage production, especially in the costuming. Same designer, the fabulous Cecil Beaton.
Eliza's father is named Alfred P. Doolittle. Bob Hoskins is a terrific choice, NLS.

Bob Hoskins *would* be great. I say we just cast me as Eliza and stop all this debate.
#46re: NY Philharmonic MY FAIR LADY - let the casting begin!
Posted: 1/9/07 at 9:25pmI think Kelsey Grammer is playing Higgins.

Kelsey Grammer would be great!
I'll go back and watch the movie later. I haven't seen it in a year or two...
Bob Hoskins is my one and only choice.

Posted: 1/9/07 at 9:33pmI would like Martine McCutcheon. I loved her Eliza in London. She was so amazing!

I like Yo Mama.
Michael Arden should sing Freddie.
