If only the food each restaurant served looked exactly like the pictures on their website!
Weird though that they serve it with a wedge already cut out. Maybe they use that for the next day's steak salad?

LOL. I know, the stock photo from a crappy chain steakhouse. Amazing! A lot of people want a fancy, good looking place to go to dinner. There's nothing wrong with that but they are paying for the atmosphere, the steaks are below average. Peter Luger will always have a long wait time, and there's nothing special about the interior. But, it's considered the best steak in NYC by many food critics.

If ypou're visiting New York, choose one of the quintessential New York-ish steakhouses, because you can find a Ruth's Chris or even a Palm in other cities.
My favorite is Sparks on East 46th Street. It's a big Wall Street hangout for men who like prime sirloin and "extra thick" lamb and veal chops, and the air of suit-jacket-over-the-chair testosterone can be very intense. But the steaks are aged and seasoned to a secret recipe and taste better to me than the ones at the Palm or Peter Luger.
And for extra Gotti Family/Tony-and-Carmela-Soprano-like drama, there was a real-life mob-boss shoot-out, right in front of the restaurant. In 1985, Mafia kingpin John Gotti (Senior) ordered a hit on the head of the Gambino family, Paul Castellano, who was showered with bullets as he exited the restaurant. Castellano's brother-in-law, Carlo Gambino had taken over the entire New York syndicate in 1957, when he had reigning boss Albert Anastasia rubbed out in a barber chair in the Park Sheraton hotel.
Of course, the blood has long since been cleaned up from East 46th Street and there haven't been any shoot-outs at Sparks since, but you never know! The night you go may be the perfect night for some vendetta!

Sorry Toots, the photo wasn't on their website. And if you don't know why a wedge is cut out, then I'm sorry for you again.

Ruth Chris is my favorite (the sizzling hot plates are awesome) but The Palm is very nice too

Really glad several people agree that Peter Luger's is nothing special.
And Joey - I'm with you on Sparks. The BEST!!! I've never had such a tender and flavorful steak in my life. Anywhere in the U.S.
Also try the Old Homestead in the Meatpacking District. One of Sly Stallone's faves.

I've eaten at most of those mentioned. Peter Luger's is wonderful, but hardly convenient for "after theatre" in midtown Manhattan. And you need to book months ahead.
Friends just did the "reopened" Gallagher's and loved it. I had one of the worst steaks ever there about 7 or 8 years ago and just couldn't make myself go back.
Strip House Midtown is really superb food -- not necessarily matched by the service.
Del Frisco's might be my current favorite, with service, atmosphere, and the food all top notch (and the drinks as well!). Wolfgang's is probably a very close second.
I haven't seen Frankie and Johnny's mentioned. GOOD! Had one of the worst meals there ever -- every single thing, and absolutely rude and deplorable service, not to mention the whole place looks like a tired diner.
Not that it's the greatest for steaks (I think they're choice, not prime, but still very, very good) but Capital Grill right by Ruth Chris has one of the best pre theatre deals in the city. I think you may have to ask for it. It's three courses for something like $30 or maybe $35 steak and includes a steak that normally costs more than that alone, along with full sized salad or soup and a full sized great dessert. It's one of the few pre-theatre specials around where they absolutely do not scrimp in any way.

What I like best is a crispy outer crust and buttery pink/red meat inside. They call it "black and blue." Who can recumbent that kind of steak? I mean, besides Ruth's?

The sign looks a little scuzzy. There used to be one around the corner from the food court on the corner of 50 th and Broadway. To think the majestic Roxy once stood on this site. So much for progress.
Question re Gallaghers. Will it still have the signature steaks in the window frontage?

Aside from Peter Luger's, I respectfully disagree with most of the options offered...in particular Capital Grille (sorry Patash).
Close to the Theater District (by train) and I would argue on par, if not superior to, Peter Lugar's is Minetta Tavern. Reservations are a must as the bar is usually packed and rather uncomfortable. Otherwise, you will be turned away.
I'll add that Peter Lugar's and Minetta Tavern are both Michelin one-stars. Both AMAZING.

I posted it for the sole purpose of mentioning their incredible "deal" for pre-theatre. Do you know of a better one in other steakhouses? I can't imagine trying to do pre-theatre at Peter Luger's and neither it nor Minetta Lane offer a "deal" anything like Capital Grills, which admittedly is NOT the best steakhouse, but still quite good. You've said nothing I'd disagree with.

I also think Peter Luger's has exceptional porterhouse steak but it is in the wrong location for you. Minetta Tavern has excellent dry-aged cote du boeuf for two, as does sister restaurant Balthazar, but you likely won't get in to either at this point without a reservation. Although Balthazar will serve you a steak at the bar, if you can find a seat.
A possibility not too far from the theater district is Porter House New York in the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle. It's run by Michael Lomonaco who used to helm the kitchen at Windows on the World. Great steak and other food. They take rezzies on opentable.com. Ask for a table with a central park view.

Bumping this thread to ask a question about Keens. We're planning to dine there on a Friday night before a performance of Cabaret which begins at 8:00 PM. What time would you recommend a reservation for that would allow enough time to get to the theater?

Thanks! If we decide to go after the show, would a reservation be needed? We live in a town where restaurants close about 9:00 with no late night dining options so we're a little unfamiliar.
