this didnt do much for me. its 90 mins, but there are some dull bits that feel like filler between scenes. its certainly not poorly written, but it builds up to a conflict that isnt really resolved realistically. i dont think its much of a spoiler to say it turns on a trans girl, but her trans-ness isnt as much of a focal point as i thought it would be?
chloe grace moretz is fantastic as the play grinds on, really committed work and i hope we see her on stage again soon.
I was today years old when I learned Chloe Grace Moretz is old enough now to play a mother role in a play.
Tom Kirdahy is behind this. Wonder what its future hopes are? I don't really see Moretz as being a huuuge Broadway draw.

I adored this when I saw it on Friday. It was a wonderful portrayal of mothers and daughters and the complexity of raising a child and what mistakes are passed down. I thought all the conversations felt very honest and real, and it was so interesting to see how the actors managed to embody such nuanced emotions when you're in such a small theater.
For what it's worth, Chloe Grace Moretz in the show is only meant to be 28 or 29 and her character got pregnant quite young.

im so glad others enjoyed it. id be very surprised if this moved to bway--there isnt much there there--but stranger things have happened.

Literally, and figuratively...

I get where you're coming from, but I actually found a lot to connect with emotionally—it hit harder than I expected.
It's a solid -- if somewhat formulaic -- play that benefits from great actors and maybe the best director of naturalistic drama working today. Moretz is superb, as is the child actor. Landecker has a rather one-note role, but she does her best to add layers that aren't there in the writing. I could see this having a life in regional theaters like Steppenwolf, et al.
