this is definitely depressing, no matter how poor a condition the show is in now. it was definitely a huge part of my adolescence.
Does anyone know if the contracts of the current cast will be up before closing?

What a shame if this show has to close with Harley Jay and Declan Bennett.

I wanted to see this on Broadway. I saw the tour a year ago. I honestly almost fell asleep during second act. That could be that I was in a large outdoor theatre and far from the stage (but still in what's considered good seats). The actor's energy still sucked. I don't know if seeing on Broadway would have been any deferent.
Still it is sad to hear it is closing.

a part of me wants to buy me some tickets for June 1 but i cant believe that will be its last performance.
its a sunday night show, there are tickets available for shows past that date... im betting it extends to the end of the summer. the producers arent stupid. i can NOT imagine there is someone else banging the door down to take the neder and if rent sells out in the coming weeks it will extend through summer 08.
almost guaranteed.

Why can't Phantom close. I know RENT is definitely doing worse in attendance and grosses, but if there's one show that's past it's time, it's phantom!
There is a certain luxury with being able to announce your closing months in advance. There may be a lease expiring at that time - who knows? I think it'd be odd for a date to be released that far in advance and then changed.
The show was in absolutely terrible shape when I last saw it on 05, but it was a very important part of my life and relationship in my late 10s, early 20s that my wife and I felt the need to buy tickets for that date to see it out and end that chapter.
I don't really know how to describe what I'm feeling right now. I guess I can accept that it's closing because it's been in such poor shape for so long, but I still feels almost like it's taking a piece of me with it.
I know I sound like some melodramatic fan with a little too much invested in the production. Shows come and go, I get that. But Rent is the show that brought me into the world of theater, which has subsequently become such an important part of my life that it really does feel like Rent has become a part of me.

On another note, how long do you think it will take before producers release the rights and regional productions along with the *shudders* high school versions start dominating the local circuit?

Phantom is not past its time in any way shape or form. Go see for yourself rather than making irrational judgments.
Finally! Next...
P.S-Phyllis, the Mr.Tuttle to Benny analogy was priceless, you rock as usual.
RENT will not close June 1. The legions and legions and legions of rabid RENT fans will go absolutely crazy and see the show as many times as they can. It will extend, and extend, and extend, and extend.
I am glad that this will make way for something new and interesting (hopefully) on Broadway. But, a part of me definitely wanted this production to out last Phantom of the Opera (which has been past its time for a long time).
Good god, from the way some of you people are acting it's like someone killed your mother, it's a show for gods sake. Really get over it.
Sad really, really sad!
I'm sad to see Rent close. It was and remains one of my favorite shows. Nothing cheers me up like listening to the cast recording. When I was a young adult, the show spoke to me (and many others), so it was with sadness, yet understanding, that I read about the show's closing.
At the same time, I don't understand why mourning one show requires denigrating another. Phantom is a completely different show, that I also happen to enjoy. Right or not, it has a broader appeal given the general demographics for Broadway. It is, after a million years, still regularly reaching 100% capacity. Many more great shows will come and go before Phantom closes. Why stress over it? There's lots of room on Broadway.

Amen roscoe(au).
I can understand people being sad and/or bummed about the whole thing. But crying? Seriously. It is just a show.
And I pity the people whose response is that it's "just a show," because you obviously don't know what it's like to have your life deeply impacted by a work of art.
I agree that some of the histrionics are uncalled for, but insensitivity is no more becoming.

Actually emcee, a number of shows HAVE impacted me, but I don't go all mopey if they close. I just move on.
I read the link on ATC as I was going over the Brooklyn Bridge tonight, all excited for my first show to go up next weekend.
I just... will be more coherent tomorrow.
"And I pity the people whose response is that it's "just a show," because you obviously don't know what it's like to have your life deeply impacted by a work of art."
I couldn't agree more with this statement.
And also, I think it's strange to say that, "from the way some of you people are acting it's like someone killed your mother". If someone killed your mother, would you be posting on a message board about how upset you were? Would you be sharing with other chat board members your first experience with your mother?
What's wrong with grieving the closing of a landmark show on Broadway? It's been twelve years. Folks in other arenas act the SAME way when a loved restaurant closes, when an infamous club is shut down, when a beloved singer goes on their final tour, when a ballpark is demolished, or when a favorite store closes up shop. Why begrudge those who held these places and events close to their hearts? Why not allow them to honor their memories in their own way? It may seem obsessive or weird to you, but it may feel right to them.
If you are passionate and want to go to the final 10 performances and get "Rent 4E" tattooed on your forehead, I say more power to you. Never be ashamed of what you love.
It's about darn time.
There.
I said it.
Let the blasts begin.
I can only imagine what that closing night is going to be like. Getting tickets for that is gonna be like pulling teeth.
As sad as I am see to see RENT go; it has had a 12 year successful run. I think its about time to bid it farewell.
Gotta see it once more..saw the tour once and Broadway once. Its extremely moving and has had such an impact on me. It'll always be one of my favorites.
Oh, kyleorlando, I couldn't agree with you more. I actually think the news came about 6 years too late.
