random question, but aside from phantom, is there anything on broadway that has been consecutively running longer than rent?
I guess we should not talk about the news of the new national tour with former RENT stars?
Since it wasn't in that golden link that makes all offical,
Clarinet: Nope. CHICAGO only opened a few months after RENT, though.
Aw, it's going to close on my birthday
This is the first time I have read a closing announcement and almost began to cry.
Up until two years ago. Rent was a show that I saw constantly. I used to be a Renthead. I saw the show 28 times total. I took a break form it to actually branch out and see other theatre. But, rent has always been the show that I love. When I saw it again with Anthony and Adam I was very angry. Only because it was clear that it was full of actors who looked as if they would be interested in being anywhere else but The Nederlander. I am actually VERY VERY sad to see this one go.
I do want to see if I can buy tickets for closing night. I have a hunch that they aren't going to do anything like extend it by popular demand or anything like that. Only because I am sure that the producers know what kind of ticket rush they are going to get just with the closing notice.

looks like lion king, chicago will beat out RENT eventually
Well, Rent had a good run. And, everyone here knew it was going to close. So here's to a happy final few months ion Broadway!
And for those who haven't seen it, and want to, DO IT BEFORE IT LEAVES. It is an amazing show.
And even though it's grosses, etc. have been going down, I still think the meaning behind the show is powerful. It can open people's mind, and it teaches people to live life to the fullest. The show had a great run. It will live in Broadway history.
No day but today
AND..END "up lifting" speech.
You can believe closing night will be spectacular.
Rent had a great run and it will always be remembered. I am certainly looking forward to seeing another show in that theater (hopefully once it has been renovated). Best wishes to the current cast, crew, previous cast members, the creative team, and especially Jonathan Larsen.

Crazy stuff... but not all that surprising.
Will it be sold out for the rest of its run?

A big bump will come in March.
Here's hoping Adam and Anthony tour with the show!!!
Um, are these two boys going to be the male version of Carol Channing. when they are 70 they are still going to be touring Rent, maybe, just maybe they could do another show.

I'm a little sad, as Rent was one of my "gateway" shows into the musical theatre world, but it had a great run. It'll go down in musical theatre history and it achieved Jonathan Larson's dream of bringing the MTV generation and musical theatre together, which is the most important thing.
Huh.
You can say all you want about how RENT needed to close, about how it was a pale shadow of its' former glory, about how bad the actors were.
But, in the end, all you can say is... huh.
Yeah, I'm sad too.

Ted Neely is like twice the years "Jesus" was when he "died" and he's still touring Superstar.
Final Destination,
I couldn't have said it better myself. I WILL miss this show and it is hard for me not to cry just hearing about the closing. Only because this has effected my life so profoundly.
And Mr. Tuttle,
Due to the fact that you don't accept PMs I will tell you right hear what I was going to say.
You know why most people aren't agreeing with you right off the bat? It is simple. On a message board forum of any kind. Anyone can say anything regardless of it being true or not. It is not wrong of anyone to have asked for a link for back up because of said fact. I do find it to be quite sad that you must brag about being right.
Personally, I don't care what industry you work in. I know that unless I get backup information then I will believe what a poster on here says.
I think it is pompous, child like and flat out annoying when your flaunting you being right.
Yes, you were right. Get over it.
There is nothing wrong with someone wanting a conformation. Calm down. It is not the end of the world if someone doesn't believe what it is your saying.

Mr Tuttle is so cranky. He's the Benny of this thread.
I heard all the hype.
I saw the show.
I never, ever got it.
Twelve years is an amazing run for that show.
Actually an accomplishment, from my view, but not necessarily the way the Rentheads see it.
That top 10 list of longest running shows has got to be about a year and a half old judging by the number of performances given.
Thank you winston. I thought for a moment there I was going crazy or something.
Twelve years is an amazing run for any show.

I agree - Rent has a great run. But it's just been falling apart lately, it needs to take a break.
I love the show though and will miss it.
