I find FUNNY GIRL less than a second-rate musical, with a libretto that is mind-numbingly dull. I don't want to see anyone doing it, ever again!
Is someone holding a gun to your head to go see it?
Jackie Hoffman. Duh.
Okay, a totslly off the wall suggestion, but not an implausible one.
Lea DeLaria.
You know she would be terrific in the part.
Fanny Brice didn't scat, so Lea isn't really right for it actually.
She does far more than just that, actually.
I've never seen her display a lot of range, and I've seen her in several very divergent shows. Just out of curiosity, can you expound on why you think she'd make a good Fanny? Because I just can't see it at all.
She's certainly not "Broadway pretty", which is a plus in a show like this. Plus, she can perform loud and abrasive and yet endearing all at the same time. I've been a fan of hers for years, and I just think she'd be a howl in this. God knows she has the voice to follow in Streisand's footsteps and quite possibly make the role completely her own.
And let's face it: Lea's never been given a proper shot on Broadway. It's about time.
I like Lea but she doesn't have the voice of Streisand. She isn't subtle in the slightest. Lea is making ugly faces and opening her mouth as wide as she can so people know the song she is singing is hard. Barbra knows most people will love her so she sings the song without overacting.

Lea DeLaria is 53 years old. Fanny Brice died at the age of 59.
QUESTION?...why is everyone against LEA MICHELE?...yes she tries too hard on GLEE but that is her character on a tv show...I believe she's got the pipes and the chutzpah to play FANNY BRICE...with a good director she can and will play within the scene, unlike her character on GLEE, that is always pushing for the spotlight...hum..that was Fanny Brice's character too...so why so glum about LEA?

LOL And? Broadway is positively littered with leading ladies playing roles ten to twenty years their junior.
Fanny is a teenager for a lot of Act One and then the show covers 10-12 years or so of her life. The actress who plays Fanny should be able to play a range from about 18-30. So... candidates and suggestions for Fanny should probably be pre-menopausal, at the very least.

Yes, there is. So, besides thinking it's a mediocre score with a dull-as-dishwater libretto attached, I'm in fear for my safety.
Regarding Lea Michele, there is nothing in her resume that indicates she has the comedic chops for the role. If I were a producer on this revival, I'd give her a look, but I'd have to be blown over by her (or anyone else's) ability to play a comic. That's why I favor Nicole Parker, or Ana Gasteyer, although the latter is a little too old.
Lady Gaga.
Nicole Parker would have been my pick. She would be a terrific Fanny Brice.

Hmmm...none of these choices really scream Fanny Brice to me. For one thing, other than Gasteyer, they all seem too conventionally attractive to fit the description of Brice, and Gasteyer is a bit long in tooth for the part. I have a hunch they are going to pick someone no one has thought of and cannot imagine in the part - the boards will be rife with venom - and then everyone will be blown away (at least in my best case scenario world).
Vicki Lewis. Brilliant. Born to play this role. Saw her play this last summer at the Sacramento Music Circus. Amazing.
With so many SNL suggestions, why not Maya Rudolph? Not only a funny girl, with somewhat of a resemblance to Brice, but she has a huge singing voice, which we've only seen employed for laughs (and isn't that what Brice usually did with her voice anyway) but which clearly shows the skill of a very talented singer (not surprising given her mom was Minnie Riperton and btw, not that it really matters, she's also half Jewish).

I agree about Lady Gaga, she would be just right for that role.
Regarding Lea Michele, there is nothing in her resume that indicates she has the comedic chops for the role.
Does anyone think Barbra Streisand is actually funny in FUNNY GIRL? If so, which part?
The scene leading up to "The Greatest Star," the roller-skating scene, the scenes with her family, the one in Nicky's hotel room, the pregnant bride shtick, and the one where she watches him play poker.
She is "naturally" funny in the film and through her perf in the OCR.
Look, the bottom line is that she gave a brilliant performance in a Bway show with a wonderful score and a ****ty book. And the film is a significant improvement.
The problem is this: Fanny is a HUGE role re the number of songs to sing, the dancing, the acting, and the overall scope of the role. Are any of the other roles in the show of interest? Not really. They are all stock characters. Unless the actors are in need of a NYC credit or in need of the paycheck, A-listers are not going to be dying for a role in the show.
And if the overrated Lea Michele signs on for the part, she is going to bitch and moan the minute rehearsals start when she [and her agent] realize "you are paying me WHAT to do how many songs? and dance? and clown? can i keep the blue marble egg?"
My post wasn't a support for Lea Michele. I don't even know who she is, except that I saw her in RAGTIME. It's just that the thing the I dislike most about Streisand in FUNNY GIRL (other than the same face she makes, regardless of what's going on), is that I don't find her the least bit funny. I didn't when I saw her in the show, and I didn't when I saw her in the film. Although, I'll grant that they somehow made her more endearing in the film (at least the first 1/2 hours of so). Anyway, my vote is for someone who can be funny.
