Posted: 2/10/11 at 4:13pmWait so does this mean Brian Bedford is leading as well? Isn't he above the title? No mention of him would lead me to believe that he will be in the leading actor category. If that's true, his Tony chances just went bye bye.

Posted: 2/10/11 at 4:36pmELF producers should've tried to campaign Amy Spanger as Leading. That's a pretty slim category this year, much more so than Featured at least.

Posted: 2/10/11 at 4:52pmSpanger would have no chance of a nomination in either category. She just wasn't that good. Beth Leavel was better and had the better role.

Spanger would have no chance of a nomination in either category. She just wasn't that good. Beth Leavel was better and had the better role.
Not to mention that her role was extremely small, it's really not leading...it's hardly even featured.

Posted: 2/10/11 at 7:08pmYes, but why NOT push Spanger into lead? Leavel is the only one of the two with any real chance of being nominated, so why not? Just a thought.

Leavel could have ended up being nominated in both Supporting and Leading this year.
And yeah, why did they get rid of Special Events category? I mean, what will happen to "Ghetto Klown" and Kathy Griffin? I mean, a stand-up routine is not a play.

"Yes, but why NOT push Spanger into lead?"
1) Because it was not a leading role.
2) It was not a very good role.
3) She was not very good in the not very good role.

This topic is FAR from arguing. But she is no doubt the leading lady of that show. (Last bow, solo number, romantic lead.)
In this slim leading lady year (Sherrie Rene Scott has a chance!), why not?!
In other news, is Brian Bedford listed above the title?

I'm gonna guess that this means no nomination for Patti LuPone/Laura Benanti

"I'm gonna guess that this means no nomination for Patti LuPone/Laura Benanti"
LuPone, probably not. But to rob Benanti would be a crime as she was the one redeeming quality in an other lackluster show (though I personally found it very enjoyable).

The only leading role in Elf was Buddy. And he's the only one with even an outside chance at being nominated.
Spanger's character disappeared for the vast majority of act 2, re-emerged to sing a sad song, then disappeared again until the finale. Definitely not a leading role.

Posted: 2/11/11 at 2:57amBrian Bedford IS above the title for EARNEST, so I guess he is being put into the lead actor category. But he also has the Best Director category.

Only Sherie Rene Scott was ruled eligible for Best Actress, so Laura Benanti and Patti LuPone would be eligible for Featured Actress. Granted, the Best Actress field isn't a giant one, but the Tonys still shouldn't have any trouble filling 5 slots. Among the possible contenders:
* Janet Dacal ("Wonderland")
* Jennifer Damiano ("Spider-Man")
* Sutton Foster ("Anything Goes")
* Rose Hemingway ("How to Succeed")
* Beth Leavel ("Baby, It's You")
* Patina Miller ("Sister Act")
* Donna Murphy ("People in the Picture")
* Sherie Rene Scott ("Women on the Verge")

Wouldn't you think T.V. Carpio would get a Best Actress nod over Jennifer Damiano? From all the talk about Spider-Man it doesn't really sound like Jennifer has all that much to do.
And it would be a downright shame if Laura Benanti didn't win Best Supporting Actress. She was brilliant. I still for the life of me do not get the hate for Women On the Verge. It was a wonderful show. Sure it may have had some flaws but I found incredibly enjoyable. It was certainly a show I would have liked to have seen more than once.

It's too early to declare 'a downright shame' if Benanti doesn't win the Tony because nobody's seen the rest of the field. Maybe someone else in another show will prove to be even MORE deserving (which, of course, is a judgment call). At this time last year, Angela Lansbury looked like a shoo-in for another Tony; then 'Promises Promises' opened toward the end of April, and the momentum shifted to Katie Finneran, who wound up winning Featured Actress.
