According to the Broadway.com article, they will only separate the category by gender in special cases but it's not the original idea so I don't think they will give the award to both Fierstein and Brown; this award is a big mess, they so did not know what they were doing when they announced it.

The rules are...

-The performer must be in their respective show for at least six months
-The performer's role must have been deemed eligible in the Lead Actor/Actress category either in its debut season if it is a revival or its current season if it is a normal show (meaning a part deemed Supporting that season can't be campaigned for Lead, since the category is only for lead.)
-The Tony voters don't vote for it. Only the 12 member committee nominates and decides the winner.
-It is not guaranteed the award will be given out every year.

How stupid is the way they're doing this? There are going to be no nominees, the winner isn't going to get a chance to shine and make a speech at the Tony Awards ceremony, so this isn't going to give any publicity to that actor/actress or to the long-running show itself. The mainstream American audience isn't going to know who the winner is and isn't going to be able to identify with what they look like, because they won't see them on TV accepting the award. Aside from the fact of all this case-by-case basis garbage. It doesn't sound like they have a clue what they're doing.

I don't think the performer has to actually be performing in the show at the time of the Tonys. Based on the press releases, they just need to have performed the role, or be contracted to perform the role, for a minimum of six months.

They don't have to give the award out every year, but seeing as how this is the first year they'll have it, I think they'll want someone to win it.

With that in mind, I think it's a foregone conclusion that Harvey can clear another spot on his mantle.

I have to also say that it makes no sense for a producer to submit someone for consideration who is no longer performing in a long running show. This award is all about advertising, and since you can only submit two names, you're gonna want to submit two people currently starring in the show. That way, if you win, you can say, "Starring Tony Award Winner..." So, I'd say someone like Shoshana Bean probably won't even be submitted. The Wicked producers will want to submit their current Elphaba (whoever that may be). Harvey will be an exception, since his show will have already closed by then.

I agree with the previous poster. The "Wicked" producers are going to submit their current Elphaba at the time (hopefully Saycon) and Megan. Like people have said, they want the publicity, so that's why they won't submit Bean (since she'll be gone,) and they have to submit Hilty because she won't be going anywhere until February/March, so her replacement won't be eligible.

And I agree with bigrab1018's comment about Rosie being crap on a stick
For Female I think it is about time that Charlotte D'Amboise got a Tony, I always feel bad how she is never the big name in Chicago-- but if she takes over in Sweet Charity then she could get the award for that. I think we can all agree that this Tony category is not well planed out.

According to the rules, Roger Bart would not be eligible for a Tony as a Leo replacement because he was an original cast member in The Producers.

I'm not saying that Maxie. I am just saying I don't see someone from a play taking it, considering they don't usually make it long enough to have replacments. PLUS I don't think she'll be eligible, because she's not taking over till January, and by the May deadline, she'll only be in for five months. Don't try and spin my words into something they're not.

You don't have to have been in the show for six months to be elligible, just CONTRACTED for six months. There's a huge difference.

Wasn't it also a rule that the role you've taken over had to have been nominated before, when the show first opened? Like, whomever is playing Glinda and Elphaba can be nominated because Kristen Chenoweth and Idina Menzel were nominated. If this is true, Ben Vereen can't be nominated, Joel Grey was not. Harvey can be, though, because Alfred Molina was nominated, correct?

No, no, no...

The role's originator only had to be eligible in the leading actor/leading actress category. They didn't have to be nominated for their replacement to be eiligible.

However, I'm fairly certain Joel Grey was petitioned as a Featured Actor, which would sadly make Ben uneligible.

And the award was designed in order to lure star replacements to Broadway and help market long-running shows. It's not going to be handed out to the 15th Belle, the 7th Tracey or the 5th Galinda. It also won't go to Harvey Fierstein, since his show will be closed, and the award will serve no purpose.
