OTHER DESERT CITIES 2026 Previews

Every family has a secret… not everyone survives it.

Other Desert Cities is back on Broadway for its first revival, starting tomorrow (September 29) at the Hudson Theatre. This star-studded mounting of Jon Robin Baitz’s drama — a 2012 Pulitzer Prize finalist — features Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Ed Harris, Allison Janney, Joe Keery, and Lily Rabe. Directed by John Benjamin Hickey, Other Desert Cities opens on October 18 and runs through January 17.

“On Christmas Eve, the sunlit Palm Springs home of a politically connected family becomes a battleground of memory, loyalty, and legacy when a daughter returns with a memoir and the power to expose the explosive truth they’ve kept hidden. With cutting insight and razor-sharp wit, they excavate old wounds and long-buried secrets. As the past comes into focus, the question isn’t just what happened, but who owns a family’s story and what is the cost to tell it.”

Who’s telling all?

I forked over real money for this one, hard to admit, since I'm a die-hard TDF-er. But this is an assemblage of elements that I couldn't miss. I also believe that the play might resonate in fascinating new ways in darkest 2026. This prism on the "post-911 world," as it was once labeled, ultimately links political resistance and its consequences - a universal in American history - through many eras, beginning with Vietnam. Eager to hear how it lands.

i loved the play in 2011 and i love this cast (seriously, Harris, Dreyfuss and especially Janney are some of my absolute favorite actors) but i just cannot bring myself to spend $250 to sit in the back of that horrible mezzanine or balcony. Good for them, I guess.

I continue to wonder why - in an era when I can conjure up just about any bizarre image I choose, in lifelike detail, with a few strokes of the keyboard - whoever creates these product images can't make them look like a real graphic on a curved, three-dimensional object.

Agree. But curious what they do/use - even if mostly bad.

Re: OTHER DESERT CITIES 2026 Previews

Just got home, and for a first preview I thought it was in really strong shape. I loved it, but I'll admit I already love the play. It's such a killer cast, and they are all commanding in their own way, with several really strong performances already. Already you believe they're a family. The big question was Julia and she goes all the places that Polly needs to go. You could tell most in the audience didn't know the play, and were maybe expecting a comedy, so when Polly said some truly horrible things you heard true gasps. There were a few minor line flubs, and the full rhythm isn't there yet, but it's well on its way. Set was beautiful and the direction solid and clean. A well deserved immediate standing ovation at end.

I miss when standing ovations were reserved for something truly breathtaking.
Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

Re: OTHER DESERT CITIES 2026 Previews

Ah, I loved BroadwayBen's report. I suspected that Louis-Dreyfus had this role in her DNA somewhere (anyone who saw the last Holefcener film, in which she revealed layers within a dramedy construct might imagine her Polly). No spoilers, but the second act takes Polly into Ibsen character territory, revealing a woman with a unique backbone. Thrilling to imagine how she navigates it. I am most excited about her and Lily Rabe. I consider Rabe's role the trickiest, with the biggest journey (it's arguably her play, ultimately). Assuming Rabe has nailed it, but would be intrigued to hear more on her approach.

Frankly, get over it. This is such a tired, snobby position and it needs to be let go. No one is telling YOU to stand, you're just sitting there miserable that other people had a good time and paid a high price for the right to do whatever the f they want when the show is over.

Re: OTHER DESERT CITIES 2026 Previews

Eh, we are a little too liberal with standing ovations in the USA. Pointing that out does not make one snobby, miserable, or a killjoy.

Getting triggered by someone pointing that out, well that is snobby and miserable

Re: OTHER DESERT CITIES 2026 Previews

May we allow a first preview of an admired play with an all-star cast a welcoming standing O? From the single report, it sounds like a successful launch. I would've been surprised if the audience didn't stand. Yes, it's routine, yes, it troubles many; but is this performance of this production a place to make the case against the standing O ritual's ubiquity?

And yet, your post is the most snobby and miserable one in the thread yet. Isn't interesting how the people who accuse others of being triggered are the ones who seem to be themselves?

As often is the case in these threads, there is ample dissent and miserableness being spread around that does little good.

Re: OTHER DESERT CITIES 2026 Previews

I want to echo what BroadwayBen said. I was there last night and what a treat it was to revisit this play. I had seen the original production eight times and I still think it is the best written play of the last 15 years. The new cast was excellent and yes, still need to further hone the cadence/rhythm, but this deserves to be a smash hit. Even if audiences are initially enticed to see this for Dreyfus or Janney, I am so happy that more audiences will get to experience this brilliant work. Smartly, I purchased two sets of tickets on the first day of the presale and am seeing it again in a couple of weeks. I will savor that afternoon because with this insane dynamic pricing, I won't be able to see it a third time without taking out a mortgage. Highly recommended.

Every show on Broadway gets a standing ovation.
They don’t mean anything as a result.

How’s the sound? I’m presuming that everyone is in a body mic, after Oedipus and Salesman.

Wonder if Janney can repeat Judith Light's Tony win? I won't be able to see this production as I'm only goin on may to NY.

I think it’s going to depend heavily on if Janney invests firmly into the character’s disdain and dry humor and doesn’t rest on the “Classic Allison Janney” cadences in those areas.

Janney can do both comedy and drama with a deft hand, but from what I remember of Silda, she is definitely a bit more of a hardscrabble black sheep of the family and Judith Light was transcendent in that role.

She could, but one thing to note is that it's only 15 years since the original, which means a good number of these voters saw Light and still have that interpretation in their head. So, she's going to really have to go above and beyond to overcome their presumed love for and probably bias towards the original performance.
