Gosh, I really don’t envy your tough decision. IMO this has been a really strong winter for Off-Broadway.
English, Prayer, and Chinese Lady are all fantastic plays, and while I haven’t seen Confederates yet, Morisseau is one of my favorite playwrights.
Prayer was probably my personal favorite of the bunch, but that’s partly because it addressed a lot of themes and questions that have been on my mind a lot recently, and that resonate with me deeply as a young secular Jewish person. And it’s also a really strong piece of writing.
The Chinese Lady has a really smart central concept/structure - it had heart and humor, but it’s also genuinely educational about this historical figure, and feels very relevant in its subject matter; a great example of how looking at history can give us insight into how we got to where we are today. The writing maybe isn’t as pristine as the other 2 plays here, but the overall concept and effect of the play is really strong, as are the performances.
English is probably the most traditional play of the 3; it’s a solid piece of writing, with resonant themes and cohesive character development. And the production/direction/acting all help to bring out a quiet, human vulnerability to the piece.
