Was I the only one bothered by the fact that Healy kept pointing out that people were "theatre" this or that, or "gay?" It just seemed like it wasn't needed.

Just playing devil's advocate here, but am I crazy in sensing there may be a "boy's club" backlash to this whole "Porgy and Bess" situation. It's the only show amongst all of the revivals named (both past and present) helmed entirely by women, and I'm also finding it super odd that the Times (or other press, for that matter) seem completely uninterested in trying to speak with Ms. Murray or Ms. Parks on the issue.

Just putting that out there.

Oh...you're not crazy. I'm kind of stunned that in a span of a year, two women directors have been excoriated for the ambitious projects they've undertaken. I'm not sure I've ever seen a male director be taken task in such a way.

Maybe they declined to be interviewed.

I ALMOST posted something about that earlier, but decided against it, because I thought that I'd be attacked and called a reverse-sexist or something.

I think most people generally have very specific arguments against what these women are doing (certainly more so in the case of Paulus/Parks), andf those have nothing to do with gender. But when you put it all together, it seems these female artists are taking a lot of heat for something male artists do all the time and nary is a word said.

The upshot, though, is watching AlanScott over at Talkin'Broadway work himself into an absolute tizzy over this! I mean...the guy knows a lot. But his stringent, strident idea of what is right and what is wrong when it comes to the theatre put me right off!

Robbie, what are you doing online? Don't you have an orgy planned with the cast of SMALL WONDER?

Do you really want the story of me seeing Tony & Tina's Wedding with Harriet from Small Wonder?

Cause I got it. And it's true.

I'm sure it would make my head spin.

The last show I saw that crackled was when that smelly bed was burning behind Sherie in WOTVOANB.

I believe there is gender and race bias in our business as much as any other, but to be biased you need some contempt for women in general, right? And what issues would Sondheim have with women? He was raised by a kind, supportive, loving mother.

I haven't come across anything that could suggest a sexist attitude in this matter. Plenty of males in the business have gotten flack over similar arrogance.

I could add examples I've ranted about but then you'd all go cross-eyed.

But every individual responsible happened to be male and I've never been accused of being a man-hating purist. I don't care what you have between your legs, just don't display arrogance and apparent genius where it isn't warranted, then go on to ruin shows with "improvements" or "updates" they don't need!!
