FOOTLOOSE closed July 2, 2000 after 708 performances and as per Variety it was a flop (financially) but certainly not a bomb.
Although there is no official description of the term, to me a bomb is a show that closes abuptly, usually within weeeks of opening, losing its total investment.
THE PIRATE QUEEN was a bomb. LESTAT was a bomb.
Shows that enjoy long runs but fail to repay their full investment are termed failures (flops). Even a show that closes having repaid 98% of its investment is still called a failure. These shows can and often do achieve total recoupment. ZORBA was a failure in 1969 but in the mid-1980s it finally repaid its full investment.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
It never has been.
Just ask Natalie Wood, Rosalind Russell, Audrey Hepburn...

Hepburn actually could sing, she just didn't have the register for the high notes.
Louise is not a big singing role...Russell was unforgivable.

what?
like Lauren Bacall could sing? Christina Applegate could sing?
in any event, it's good to see that Kevin Bacon's face has re-adapted to his nose. there was a period there between Apollo 13 and The Woodsman where he seemed to be at that awkward age where 'cute' was a liability, rhinally speaking.
Actually, I was thinking more of WSS for Wood.

Natalie was dubbed. For the most part, movie musicals no longer dub people, which I think is a shame because usually they cast people who sorely need it. And they would never dub Zac, because he and most of America, apparently, are under the delusion that he's a good singer.
BEEN WORKIN' SO HARD!

Well, they also can sweeten a lot better now than they could in the 50s and 60s. Like with Renee Zellweger.
eta: Who was it in the Woody Allen movie musical who was so bad, even technology couldn't help her so they dubbed her? Was it Drew Barrymore?

I've grown to like Zac Efron more based on what I've seen of him in HAIRSPRAY (hated him in HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL).
To me, the break would be whether the movie is based on the Broadway version of the musical or is a completely new version. If it's a new version, I'll be okay with it.
While I don't think Zac deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Gordon McRae or Fred Astaire I don't think he's untalented.
I think this could be good. He doesn't have a huge range, but he has a decent enough voice.
And Spork, are you aware that you suffer from the same delusion?
Zac Efron...Kenny Ortega... Footloose movie?
ugh

Let's just add this to the list of upcoming movie musicals...
Hairspray
Sweeney Todd
Mamma Mia!
Fame
Sunset Boulevard
Footloose
Nine
missing any?
Zac Efron has become the go-to guy for movie musicals which may make it harder when the time comes and he wants to break out of that. I think he has potential for Footloose, but its just God, I hope he isn't in the Fame remake.

Wha? I'm under the delusion that he's a good singer? Or the delusion that I'm a good singer? Or some other sort of delusion?
I suppose he's better than some other movie musical stars (coughGerardButlercough) but I still don't think that he's a good singer.
I don't think Zac Efron is the "go-to-guy" for anything, including movie musicals. If anyone is, it's Hugh Jackman.

Now most importantly: who will play the guy who does the robot at the end?

This isn't news. They've been planning to make it into a movie since 2004. It used to be up on IMDB and they took it down...so i guess it will be back up now.
Zac Efron is news though...
I like Zac. i think that it's great that he's doing another musical, but WHY Footloose?!
Oh well... who knows it could be good...
"If we don't live happily ever after at least we survive until the end of the week!" -Kermit the frog "I need the money... it costs a lot to look this cheap!" -Dolly P. "Oh please, Over at 'Gypsy' Patti LuPone hasn't even alienated her first daughter yet!" Mary Testa in "Xanadu" "...Like a drunk Chita Rivera!" Robin de Jesus in "In the Heights"
"B*tch, I don't know your life." -Xanadu After that if he still doesn't understand why you were uncomfortable and are now infuriated, kick him again but this time with Jazz Hands!!! -KillerTofuam i the only one who thinks that ZAC is cute in that REALLLY GAY PRETTY BOY look.... like if he came out you really wouldn't be too too suprised.

I'm scared, if Kenny Ortega is directing, I wouldn't be surprised if he cast all of the HSM kids. I think Zac Efron is the most talented out of the kids in HSM(I prefer his voice in Hairspray much more than the guy who dubbed him in HSM) but he's still not great by any means.

So pretty much any movie musical from here on will include Zac Efron...?
Well, why not? Hugh Jackman clearly wasn't interested in starring in the dozen or so movie musical roles he's been offered the last several years. I'm happy to see that there's someone who is embracing the film genre.
Yeah, yeah. Jackman is remaking Carousel... I'll believe that when I see it.

I like Footloose...
But Zac Efron possibly starring in it makes me want to throw up in my mouth.
Edit: When thinking about casting, the first thing I tought was Lilli Cooper (Spring Awakening) as Rusty.
