Variety reports that Paramount is developing a musical remake of the 1984 film Footloose and will develop it for "High School Musical" star Zac Efron and director Kenny Ortega. Dylan Sellers will produce.
Ortega is in talks to helm and choreograph, and Efron is in talks to play Ren McCormack, the rebellious newcomer (originally played by Kevin Bacon) in a town where dancing has been banned.
The original was directed by Herb Ross and written by Dean Pitchford.
The trade says the plan is to turn the project into a full-blown musical. Footloose was already turned into a Broadway musical.

So how many degrees of separation do you all have from Kevin Bacon?
(hmmm... if you enlarge both photos, it seems the eyes have it.)

haha where do you get bombed from???
The show ran for over 700 performances on broadway, had a hugely successful national tour, has become a HUGE hit in the UK and is out on its 3rd UK tour after a sold out west end run , has become huge across Europe etc etc etc.
Sorry but to me over 700 performances is not a bomb by any stretch of the imagination

To appear in three musicals in a two year time span, with two more possibly in the works.
What actor since like the '50's has done that?
I wish it wasn't Footloose though- and it's not even based on the Broadway Footlose either, is it?
There has got to be better source material, or at least a Broadway show that hasnt yet taken the leap to the screen.

Footloose was a great 80s dance musical movie, it got some great reviews and launched Kevin Bacon to stardom, it was so much fun
I was always shocked it was based on a true story

Posted: 7/11/07 at 12:10pmHmm... It's great that the film industry is investing in the "Movie Musical" genre. Footloose wouldn't be my first choice, but I also don't have the $MONEY$ to make that decision. Oh well...

Wait... is this going to be a movie version of the Broadway show Footloose or an entirely different musical based on the original movie Footloose?
If it was a movie version of the stage show, I'd see it in a heartbeat, but if it wasn't it wouldn't be worth seeing Zac Effron.

I enjoy Footloose.
Zac Efron is not bad.
I'd see it.
I wonder who will play Ariel or Rev. Moore?
Let the outrageous casting rumors--- BEGIN!
