Huh. Not sure there is anything wrong with movie musicals. They used to be quite common, so why do people act like they are some sort of grotesque anamoly?
Regardless, this is one that I find mostly uninteresting. Though it will probably will be better than the Broadway production, which wouldn't be too difficult.
Let's see, me to Kevin Bacon...
Okay! I know my friend's sister Rebecca, who is a random Hufflepuff in 'Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix', which also stars Gary Oldman, who was in 'JFK', as was Kevin Bacon.
Jeez, you really CAN get anyone to Kevin Bacon in less than six moves. O_O
Oh, wait, 'Footloose'. Tbh, I think it's hilarious how angry people get about Zac Efron. If he is doing it, more power to him, and I'll totally go see it. ^_^
So should we just expect Zac Effron in every movie musical from now on?

If they ever make a musical movie out of Les Mis and Zac is cast as Marius, I have lost all faith in humanity.
Didn't you guys hear.. He's gonna be Guido for the upcoming NINE movie.
And there's talks about a FOLLIES movie with Zac as Ben.
I bet Dominic Cooper is happy he got cast in Mamma Mia when he did.

>>>Yeah, yeah. Jackman is remaking Carousel... I'll believe that when I see it.<<<
His company is producing it and he has said they just got the rights to it last year so it sounds like it's going to happen.
Other than CHICAGO (in which at the time he thought he was too young) and PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (in which he was commited to Boy from Oz) I don't know what other movie musicals you are referring to....???
"Let's just add this to the list of upcoming movie musicals...
Hairspray
Sweeney Todd
Mamma Mia!
Fame
Sunset Boulevard
Footloose
Nine
missing any?"

Okay, which of the movie musical leads have really been on a stage musical ( not Efron, Travolta, Depp, Gere, Murphy or Foxx, etc) - except Hugh Jackman and Ewan McGregor ?
Hugh has tried to keep his ties to the theatre within his very crowded film schedule ( even if his involvement lately has only been in TBFO on Broadway... and the arena tour in Australia, which btw was successfully directed by Kenny Ortega...and maybe the rumoured London run next year - see BWW-West End). Last year, he had expressed interest in a forthcoming stage musical by Menken ( Leap of Faith) but nothing seems to have come out of it...But if there is one movie musical that I would like him to do first, it is SUNSET BOULEVARD ( if ALW can ever sort the project financing and the casting of the leads and the choice of director). Hugh's name was mentioned by ALW in one of the more recent interviews...although Hugh himself says that project seems a bit unreal ( presumably because of its long evolution as a film project).
He is also involved in TV producing ( Viva Laughlin - a musical of sorts -LOL!) and film producing ( The Tourist, Wolverine, and a few others down the line, including CAROUSEL and a written-for-the-movies musical IF YOU COULD SEE ME NOW)-- he is busy, busy...so much so that The Hollywood Reporter says that it is FOX's intention to start production of WOLVERINE the day after he gets out of filming the Baz Luhrmann epic with Nicole K called AUSTRALIA. No time for a break or even to reshape his body and hairstyle for the role - LOL.
Zac makes me laugh in a good way. When I found out he was playing Link, my fave Broadway character (hence the username) I was weary of the choice, but decided I should see what all the fuss was about and I bought HSM. I loved it! I LOVE Zac now like all 12 year old girls in the country. So I'm excited about Footloose. I think anything he's in is going to be a hit! He and Shia LeBeouf are IMO going to be the huge for a long time!
Good for Zac! But it's interesting to know that he didn't use his singing voice in The High School Musical according to People Magazine....but then he finally did in the Part 2.

Gere has been in a musical , he was in the London production of Grease
I think that Zac has talent and I hope that he continues to do what he's doing. People seem to like to write off anyone who was in High School Musical.
And I LOVE that more movie musicals are being made.

John Travolta was Doody in the Broadway production of Grease.
Wow, you guys are the most complaining group of people
I think Zac has a really good singing voice. It's not the best ever, but a lot better than a few people who have been in movie musicals, and even on Broadway.
While I think Zac is fairly talented, I was hoping they would do something better (IMO) then footloose.
I really hope it's a film version of the stage musical, and they include all of the craptastic songs. ("Party in My Pants" anyone?) Now that would be fabulous.

Please do your research before posting a statement like that. Not only was Travolta "Doody" in Grease he was also part of the Original Broadway Cast of Over Here! alongside The Andrews Sisters, Ann Reinking and Marilu Henner. Gere played "Danny" in the Original London production of Grease.

I like Zac okay. His voice was electronically tortured in HSM, but he sounds good in Hairspray. And Footlad (I'm too lazy to look up his name,) is a good fit for him.
This will suck, though, because Kenny Ortega is a massively untalented director. No imagination, dull angles, and horrible actor direction. Two High School Musicals and Hocus Pocus is all he's got going for him.
But it's interesting to know that he didn't use his singing voice in The High School Musical according to People Magazine....but then he finally did in the Part 2.
Um, it may have been interesting fifty years ago when everyone first found out about it. It's decidedly boring and uninteresting these days.
Haven't seen Zac yet, except for pictures. Though I really love Footloose. I rather see it as a Broadway show, since I enjoy the Movie and I am kind of tired of them re-making the wheel, over and over again.
Yet, I will see the new Hairspray for the same reason I saw the old one, it's Casting. I just can't imagine there isn't anything left, that can't be scripted and put in a Movie? In re-makes, maybe a few things are changed, rarely an improvement, sometimes interesting but they are re-making Movies that were successful to begin with.
I was thinking about the Rev. because John Lithgow was so right for that role and here are a couple of parts that I like. Not sure about singing for all of them though.
Reverend-
Kevin Spacey
Christopher Walken- though not sure he can sing but he is so good at character transitions. Over worked though and close to being over-exposed but I like him!
Violet-
Joan Allen- not sure she can sing and falling under Walken's getting over exposed but again, great character transitions.
Annette O'Toole- can also play that very cool but don't ignore me type of character.
Ren's Mom-
Minnie Driver- She could also play Violet but I like her better in this role
The Mill Owner- Kevin Bacon - because he should be in there somewhere, if he can stand it.
So who is going to do all of the gymnastics in the new version or are they just throwing away the script and editing in whatever seems funny at the time?
I just hope they don't lose that Midwestern Theme and make it all Hollywood.
It is what they will do with the music that I am the most leery of. I would like to hear more buzz on this whole project.

About Ariel, I like the idea of a newcomer. Nikki Blonsky did so well in Hairspray! I'd like to see a new girl around the agte of 17-18. I hope they cast teens as teens haha.
What would they call it? They can't really call it FOOTLOOSE as it would cause too much confusion, with the musical film and with the stage version. It would have to have a new score as (most of) the music is very 1980's. I never saw the stage version (it bombed here in Australia) I take it that it is set in the 1980s? So I would take it that it will be the same story but presented with a new score and set in current times.
