Posted: 2/17/08 at 11:46pmWell, on one hand, you could say there can't possibly be that many ABBA fans out there. On the other hand, there are alot of people who want a fun, easy night at the theater to just kinda sit back and enjoy. You dont have to think about character development, thematic elements, etc. Mamma Mia fills that niche very well. But on the third hand (haha) I still havent seen it.

Posted: 2/17/08 at 11:49pmI have to say, this is always the one topic I hate seeing, I guess it is because I am an industry professional, when shows close it means the loss of jobs, having to go back on the road, etc. It is one thing that just feels bad to talk about. That being said, some of the long runners have been around a very long time and it would be nice to see more fresh productions on stage. I will also add, that I would be very disappointed to see Phantom close, just because it was the first show i saw many many years ago.

Posted: 2/17/08 at 11:51pmSo what shows are we picking from? Phantom and Chicago obviously, Lion King maybe? Any others I'm forgetting? I think they all have a couple more years of life left in them but of those three, I think Chicago will. I think all their C-list stunt casting will eventually lose it's effectiveness and they'll have to shut it down.

Posted: 2/17/08 at 11:52pmJimmy, that's understandable but people will get jobs. There are plenty of shows out there. We're not in 1974.

People can poke fun all they want at the stunt casting of CHICAGO.
BUT the reality IS that almost all of the stars were quite good and well suited for their roles. Who could the worst one have been, Melanie Griffith? And she even got GREAT reviews from the critics.
Plus they audition all of their stars.

Posted: 2/17/08 at 11:56pmI'd make an argument Lisa Rinna when she did Chicago was a B-lister, not C-lister. :)

Posted: 2/17/08 at 11:59pmI think I didnt like Chicago back in 1998 was because I wanted to see sets rolling on and off the stage and lots of color and glitz. I don't think I was mature enough to get into the dancing and listen to the music. I think the show's strength lies so much in its staging, which forces you to focus on the performers limbs (the only thing that isn't black on the stage--and black skin is not black!) and of course the orchestra.

I don't think any of the real long-running shows are in any danger of closing. Phantom, Chicago, and Lion King all have multiple years left in them. Lion King probably has another decade, at least.
Of the second tier of long running shows, of which I would count shows like Wicked, Avenue Q, Hairspray, and Jersey Boys, I would guess that Avenue Q would be the first to go.
My guess would be that Legally Blonde is gone before 2009 arrives.

Posted: 2/18/08 at 12:04amIt isn't a MEGA hit liked The Phantom or Chicago were (or are). And yes, it Legally Blonde and Avenue Q will be gone by the start of the next decade.

oh man that's right Ave Q!
Ok I'm gonna venture to say:
A Chorus Line closes first
then Avenue Q
then Chicago
then Hairspray
please note---I dont want any of them to close (except Hairspray--but that is for very personal reasons which I dont care to divulge here on BWW)

#48re: Next Long Running Show to Close?
Posted: 2/18/08 at 12:13amThe Weisslers are MUCH better at stunt casting than the producers of RENT and HAIRSPRAY.
