At the talkback for High Button Shoes yesterday, someone asked if they knew what shows were being done next year and the answer was yes and one of them will have subscribers shouting FINALLY!
So that got me excited. I really hope its either Dear Word or Mack and Mabel
I’m holding out for Darling of the Day, but would be thrilled with Mack and Mabel, especially if they brought back Douglas Sills and Alexandra Socha.
I feel like that means it’s a big show people love but can’t be produced anymore because of exorbitant costs. That leads me to believe it could be something like a Camelot or Oliver? Both need a large chorus and orchestra and are popular titles, but other than a one night only concert or something, I feel like no one will go near them for a full revival.
I would kill to see Mack and Mabel, though.

have these gotten worse over the years? I just caught up with "High Button Shoes". YIKES. So disappointed.

I think I liked the offerings this season more than most, but I do think it was kind of a weak season. They were limited in their selections, though, because everything had to somehow fit in with City Center’s anniversary celebrations. There have been a few truly amazing productions at Encores! in the dozen years I’ve been going, and I’ve seen people who have been going since the beginning mention more recent offerings as being highlights.
If the past is an indicator, the season will be announced this coming week.
On a recent episode of the Three On The Aisle podcast, Laura Benanti said she's been talking to Jack Viertel about playing Ruth in WONDERFUL TOWN (since she played Eileen last time). It could be years away, but that would be fun.
A well-placed source a year ago claimed HIGH SPIRITS was happening this past season, so perhaps that will happen next year?
Encores! has done very few shows from the 1970s, and there are a ton of gems: Seesaw, Ballroom, Shenandoah, Raisin, They're Playing Our Song, Sugar (though I bet the worldwide rights are restricted now), and of course the dream-show Mack & Mabel.
Also, Woman of the Year.
Let’s hope they get their casting secured first this time so they don’t have another incident like they had with “Call Me Madam”.

As long as they're on a $1500/week favored nations contract, we just have to cross our fingers and pray someone doesn't get a TV show or higher-paying offer...

Reprise LA 1.0 did MACK AND MABEL with Douglas Sill, Jane Krakowski and Donna McKechnie in the Lisa Kirk role about 15 years ago.
Only McKechnie survived.

I saw Sills and Socha in that truncated version a couple of years ago. They were brilliant. They cast them and they can take my money.
Dear World is a good vehicle for Bernadette.
If its something that everyone will scream "Finally!" about, I hope they record an album!

I think High Spirits was supposed to be part of Hey, Look Me Over!, if I’m remembering the casting notice correctly.

Seesaw and Ballroom -- yes, please! Have they ever done Canterbury Tales? I love the recordings a lot, but have no idea what the book is like,

Yes, we would all like to see "Love Life" and "Mack & Mabel." I would add to the list of shows to do: "I Can Get It For You Wholesale," "Take Me Along," and "Silk Stockings."
They recently did a musical review of sorts which was kind of a stinker, where they chose songs from shows they had done over the last 25 years, Mack and Mabel was a big section of the review as I recall. I so not think they were that limited to what they could have chosen this year. Basically it just need to have a dance focus. The third choice of the season should have been something that people could have gotten excited about.
I wish they would do some Maltby and Shire or Romance Romance.
I think it’s Love Life. The score was restored last year for a German production.
After watching "First You Dream - The Music of Kander & Ebb" this afternoon, I'd really like to see Encores! do a staged reading of "All About Us".
The only reason I'd like this is in the hope that there might be a legitimate, purchasable recording of the score made.
PS: I also really wish there was a commercial recording of First You Dream.... Among all the other wonderful performances, I really want a recording of the trio, "At the Rialto/Happy Endings/Only in the Movies".
I wonder if those three ladies (silently) felt the joy of knowing they were performing one of the best numbers in the show...?
The New Season was announced about a month ago. It included Thoroughly Modern Millie, Mack and Mable and a musical I had never heard of written by Kurt Weill. There was probably another thread on this. I made a mistake in a previous post. Hey Look Me Over was a revue of songs from shows they had never done but had thought about doing.
