Does anyone think that Next to Normal could throw off Billy Elliot and take home the big awards at the Tony's this year? Tell me what you think

I think there are way too many threads today about the Tony awards.
I agree with Phyllis.
And, sadly, no. BILLY has it in the bag.

I also think BILLY should and will win, but there was a huge upset in 2004, so I guess no one is ever "safe" or "a lock."
Avenue Q deserved to win, no doubt about it.

After previous years... nothing will surprise me anymore so I think 'next to normal' could win, which would make me really happy!

Yeah, I think Avenue Q was overall a better show deserving the win.
Well, realistically, any of the four nominees COULD win. But BILLY is a touring producer's dream. NEXT TO NORMAL is a tough sell in New York; could you imagine how it would sell in the middle of nowhere? BILLY will win the Tony, I can say with 99.99% certainty.
BILLY will win.
NEXT TO NORMAL will close by the end of July.
It just makes me mad because Billy doesn't need to win one Tony at all to be successful. Come on, it made a million in its first week in previews. N2N needs the Tony in order to stay open.

BILLY's Tony win would help already excellent ticket sales. However, I'm not sure a win for NEXT TO NORMAL would boost ticket sales *that* much, since it isn't selling as well as it should right now after the across the board RAVE reviews. I could be wrong though...just an observation.

It only upset the WICKED fans. The difference is that both BILLY and N2N are worthy titles.

Well... Wicked was making a ton of money and was the one with the better word of mouth. Yet, it lost.
Spring Awakening was the one harder to sell but had a huge fan base... and it won.
WithoutATrace, the N2N reviews were just posted several days ago, give it time.
The Next to Normal (not that hard to type it out...) reviews we're posted about three weeks ago WishingOnlyWounds2.
I love the show, but I can't see the ticket sales ever reaching the level of many other Tony nominees.

It kind of bugs me that some people think N2N deserves the Tony because it needs it to survive. The Tonys aren't given out on the basis of who would profit the most from a fancy award, they should be given out on artistic merit.
But then again, Idina Menzel won over Tonya Pinkins.

I saw the show on Saturday, April 25th... not a review is sight. When I went back to the city on Friday, reviews were up. Also, I typed the title out in an earlier post.

I would easily say N2N is the dark horse. Its nyTIMES review was a FLAT OUT RAVE, as well as the Rolling Stones review that told BE to 'take that'. I think now that the very commercial N25 was forgotten, N2N's chances went way up.
BILLY ELLIOT = SPRING AWAKENING
9 TO 5 = LEGALLY BLONDE
NEXT TO NORMAL = GREY GARDENS
I mean... I hope so...... there have many surprises before. I think it could happen.

Billy Elliot isn't equivalent to Spring Awakening at all. Billy Elliot was highly anticipated and had already been a success in two other countries... Spring Awakening was an original musical. If anything 'next to normal' is... original musical that came and blew audiences away.

please don't compare n2n to Spring Awakening, it's really insulting to anyone involved with the show.
BILLY ELLIOT = SPRING AWAKENING
9 TO 5 = LEGALLY BLONDE
NEXT TO NORMAL = GREY GARDENS
Good comparison.
Add:
SHREK = MARY POPPINS
NEXT TO NORMAL should be so lucky as to have HALF of the level of success that SPRING AWAKENING has had and continues to have.

Spring Awakening: The edgy, risque, small, cozy musical that won the hearts of the critics... and theatre lovers and struggled with tourists.
Billy Elliot: The big, critically acclaimed, tourist trap tear jerker.
How is that the same?
"BILLY ELLIOT = SPRING AWAKENING
9 TO 5 = LEGALLY BLONDE
NEXT TO NORMAL = GREY GARDENS
Good comparison.
Add:
SHREK = MARY POPPINS "
Complete agreement.
