Posted: 5/5/09 at 5:36pmIt really should be BILLY ELLIOT = MARY POPPINS (both made specifically for the nondiscriminating tourist); You can't compare Spring Awakening to Billy Elliot since Spring Awakening has a score that is pretty close to a 10 on a 1 to 10 scale while Billy Elliot's score would be lucky to rate a 2.

They're ANALOGIES. I was comparing that season's musicals with this season's. Not a show by show comparison.
Thank you, blaxx, and laura is broadway, for getting it.

I also get it FOSTER.
And it's a perfect one at that.

Posted: 5/5/09 at 5:41pmI get what WBAF is saying, but Spring Awakening CLEARLY was not the tourist/critically acclaimed show that Billy Elliot is.

Posted: 5/5/09 at 5:45pmI don't think N2N will win for Best Musical. But I do think that it may "pull a Urinetown" by winning Best Score and Best Book.

So by this comparrison:
ROCK OF AGES = CURTAINS?
Otherwise, a fine comparisson, but I think we all might be highly under estimating Shrek's power.

Thank you, AndAllThatJazz22!
defyingravity07, I couldn't agree more!
ZONEACE, I'm not comparing the actual shows... just the level of publicity and word of mouth they arrived on Broadway with. I would never try to degrade next to normal to a show like that.

I know that Foster is not a fan of Next to Normal and that I am, but I agree with him on a lot of his opinions and completely agree with him here. I love Next to Normal but I am not one of those fans who are so biased that they convince themselves that Next to Normal has been doing well and will do well (not naming any names... lol). I can see it lasting through the summer, but not far past Labor Day unfortunately. If their rave reviews haven't boosted sales, then I don't think these Tony noms/potential wins will help them that much either. Trust me, I hope they do grab a couple wins and would love to see them last a year on Broadway, but I have a hard time picturing that, especially a win for Best Musical.

Just as Middle American Tourists could not make their way to see the crazy cat ladies of Grey Gardens, they will also not make their way to see the problems of a manic depressive woman getting shock treatments in Next To Normal despite the great reviews.

I HOPE that N2N will win and truly feel that is SHOULD win based on its merit.
I THINK that BE will win based on its popularity and sentimentality.
I just hope that its not a sweep and that other shows get the awards they deserve.

I agree with the point about being a fan of N2N and not letting it cloud your perception.
A while back, I said N2N would most certainly not win Best Musical and was yelled at for "bashing the show" and "claiming to be a fan."
There's a huge difference between being a fan while being objective and realistic and being a fan who lets their personal views of a show cloud the realistic possibilities.
Sadly, N2N will be gone by September and BILLY will run for years with a crapload of money and Tonys. Its just the way it'll work...would I love to be proved wrong? Hell yes. Will I be? Don't think so.

Posted: 5/5/09 at 7:45pmNothing good comes out of being negative... I've been so surprised with the TONYS before I'm ready for everything... except Rock Of Ages winning... but hey, Spring Awakening won, so you never know.
#38re: Next to Normal as a Dark Horse?
Posted: 5/5/09 at 8:11pmSpring Awakening was far and away the favorite to win that year.
#39re: Next to Normal as a Dark Horse?
Posted: 5/5/09 at 8:29pmFoster, those analogies were spot on. I agree completely.

Posted: 5/5/09 at 9:21pm...And BILLY ELLIOT is far and away the favorite to win this year. The analogies are totally spot-on.

Who the hell are you to call me a fool? Do you have some way of knowing for sure who's going to win? No, you don't!
I stated opinions, which can't be wrong.
I also basically stated anything is possible at the TONYS because there is no way of knowing who will win because, guess what, the winners haven't been picked yet!

Can't some of us dream, WickedRocks?
I mean, 10 Tony noms is NOT "far and away" from 15. It's actually pretty close.
So, my dream is that Next to Normal will win Best Musical over Billy Elliot.
Don't get me wrong, I love both shows, but for very different reasons.
And for me, that's the reason why
NEXT TO NORMAL = SPRING AWAKENING
The reasoning is simple: They're both 'indie rock' musicals that address serious social issues. They're both set on a small stage with bands instead of orchestras. Neither relies on formula, in any way and on any level, unlike the big shows that they go up against at the Tonys.
But, yeah, I can see it. You guys are probably right. BILLY will take it.
But in my heart, deep in my heart, I'm still rooting strongly for N2N.

N2N got 11 nominations, not 10. And sure, if I had it my way, I think we all know who I'd pick to win Best Musical.
I'm just trying to be realistic.

I would love love love for N2N. But I'm in the "sigh, it'll be Billy" camp.
I'm just not sold on a Billy sweep.
...but then again I am adverse to sweeps in general.

I'd be happy with either one winning, to be totally honest. I mean I'd be ecstatic if Next to Normal did, by some miracle, win but I've come to terms with the fact that it won't. I'll be happy with score and book for them.
Also they released tickets through September for NTN after the nominations today. Take that to mean what you will. I'm not under any delusions that this show is going to be a long running hit or that it'll make it through the winter season but if it can make it to the fall at least, that'd be amazing.

I do agree that BIlly is MOST LIKELY to win, but my god... if you haven't learned now that there is no such thing as a lock, you people will never learn. We JUST saw a "lock" get snubbed. If I'm not mistaken, we ALL said 9to5 was a lock for a best musical nomination and the 2nd most likely to win... and look at what happened. We ALL said Raul Esparza would win best actor, and Hyde-Pierce took it. We ALL said Wicked would win best musical, and it didn't. There is NO such thing as a lock, get it through your heads. Is Billy Elliot most likely to win, absolutely... but in no way does that mean it WILL win.
NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER deny the possibility of a shocker.
