wow...i knew about the rumors but didnt expect it would actually happen. i thought they'd keep celeb casting and it would stay open for some time.

I still think it's odd they couldn't find ANYONE. If they close without recouping, that sucks.

My guess is that Debbie Reynolds might have worked out as "Madame," but without a real draw as Desiree, they would start bleeding money. Best to go out on a high note.

I find it hard to believe that they couldn't find replacements that would bring enough people in to stay open for at least the summer.
I'm also wondering what impact (if any) this will have on CZJ's Tony chances as they're now closing a week after the ceremony.

If the show is close to recouping, they should have tried running the Summer with "Broadway names." If CZJ won the Tony, maybe they could have enticed her to come back in the Fall?
Oh well. I am glad they are going out on a high note. I just hope this was the best decision for them.

Posted: 5/18/10 at 6:46pmIt's a shame, I think Desiree it's such a great role so I'd have loved to see different actresses play the role, or at least just another replacement. I'm glad I got to see Zeta-Jones in it though. I can't believe they didn't recoup, that's very surprising.

I, too, was wondering if this will affect the voting for the Tonys. Not that we can truly ever know.
I agree I'm surprised they weren't at least WILLING to try to make a go of it. Perhaps they looked at the HUGE drops in numbers during CZJ weeks off as a sign to let it go with the current stars.
