Maybe that's why they're not planning on extending with new people that could possibly lose them money...they could be putting said money into filming it.
Oh Jesus, are we REALLY going to delve into this?
Debbie Reynolds would have been a draw. She ended up passing. As did all the other big stars they approached.
It wasn't that the producers could not find replacements. It's that they could not find replacements starry enough to carry the show after Catherine and Angela leave.
I'm so happy I'm getting to see this before it closes.
I've been wanting to see this, but don't think I will be able to now. It does seem a little silly though if they don't recoup their investments and close, considering it has been selling well.
Well, I can't say I didn't see this coming, but I'm still disappointed nonetheless.
Apparently none of the stars that would have kept the show running as it is now were interested in being a replacement.
The production has to be close to recouping. Its done terrific business and unless Zeta Jones and Lansbury are getting 50 percent of the box office, it wouldn't make sense for it to have cost more than the production has brought in since last year.
At any rate, its a little disappointing that we no longer get to guess what stars might come in as replacements, but I applaud the producers' class for not settling for second rate names to simply keep the production running.
There have been any number of actors who have won Tony Awards one week before their show closes, so I'm not sure why there is this sudden belief that Sherie Rene Scott or Montego Glover are now overwhelming front runners. EVERYDAY RAPTURE is also a limited run that isn't out lasting the Tonys by much more than NIGHT MUSIC, and though I suppose there is always the horrifying possibility MEMPHIS could sweep, it does seem at this point unlikely that Glover will take it. Remember that the Outer Critics Circle actually gave VICTOR VICTORIA their Best Musical Trophy. They aren't always that on the ball in terms of Tony voting tastes.

Speaking of VICTOR/VICTORIA...imagine Julie Andrews sitting in Angela's chair.
I wondered about the show closing abruptly. I noticed they were not selling past June 20 when they originally had dates into late August.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
The producers probably anticipate the show breaking even before they close, so it's not worth stressing over.
I hope they film this! DVD Sales would be a great way to recoup this investment.
The costs of filming and producing a DVD would drag them further into the hole before they saw any income on sales from the handful of theatre nerds who buy it. A DVD would probably never make a profit.

A better production (or even a good production) of the show might not have needed a big name to keep it running. As it is, this is another Trevor Nunn travesty -- a Trevorsty. Let's hope it doesn't take another 30 years for another production, maybe one with a sensible director.
Bartlett Sher, where are you when Sondheim needs you?
^ Oh give me a break. No commercial production of Night Music would have sold without stars in this day and age.
Well, couldn't you say the same about SOUTH PACIFIC though? I mean, I guess SOUTH PACIFIC is more accessible in a way but it's also an old-fashioned musical about racial politics at the time, yet Sher's production managed to be a hit with just Kelli O'Hara and Paulo Szot in the leads (I guess they rejected a number of name actresses according to Riedel, right? ) . I do think NIGHT MUSIC would have been a hard sell at any point.
I'm really rooting for Catherine Zeta-Jones still, I refuse to believe that Montego Glover of all people is going to win, but stranger things have happened, we'll see.

I had hoped that they would go for Broadway talent and some advertising to keep it running for the summer months, but I guess not.
So sad to hear the news. I'm glad I saw it during my trip to NY (even though I didn't like the pacing of the first act), but I guess with no announcement of a replacement, it wan't unexpected. Though it would have been nice to see a Sondheim show actually get a decent, long run.
And please, don't get my hopes up with a DVD release, since I know in my heart that this would never happen. (Though, with all it's faults, it's still a lot better than the Liz Taylor version (minus Rigg, and Gingold and Cariou reprising thier roles).

My thoughts exactly, frontrowcentre2. With Rachel York as Desiree!
^ YES! Rachel York is amazing and deserves more starring roles!

I don't know the exact numbers, but it is my understanding that Al and CZJ were getting a HUGE portion of the gross/profits. Like so much, that it would be extremely difficult to recoup, even if selling extremely well.
Stay tuned for a recoupment announcement in the coming weeks.
Would you assume they would still have student rush on closing night or should I go ahead and book a ticket if I want to see it closing night?

They must be close to recouping. Those numbers in a house that size have been wonderful.
And I agree with MichaelBennett, I'm happy to see they didn't cast B-rate stars and let the production lose one of the only things it really had: class.
Can we not say what other stars were approached for this?
I'm curious.
I saw it 2 weeks ago, and loved it. Such a class act those 2 - CZJ & AL.
The should have gotten Madame to play Madame.
That would have sold some tickets.
And her "Liaisons" would have KILLED.
Her "wooden ring" speech would have been magnificent.
... not to mention appropriate!
I love that she has her own built-in Frid, too, carrying her around wherever she goes.
