Awww, why am I so late to contribute to this very entertaining thread?
One thing that I should mention, is that it is somehow unusual for Disney to change the look of their cartoon characters from screen to stage (and of an obvious background) right from the production's inception (it is usually until later in the run when they get PC). Of course, the character itself, I'm sure, is not popular enough as the lead character (I'm sure that if the title character was initially cast by someone who doesn't resemble the original the discussion would be A LOT more heated and even funnier, but obviously not the case....) So I can see how it can bother some.
But, like it or not, the show is pretty much already a hit (yep, even if they did it with roller skating sock puppets) and, in years to come, performers from all races will get a chance at all the roles. And, when it is Toni Braxton's turn, an extra song will be added!!! Yeeeeee!!!!

Look, guys, I have the perfect way to end this discussion. You all saw the movie, right? Well, think of Ariel's sisters. They all have different colored fins, as do Ariel and Triton. So evidently, random racial changes are not uncommon amongst the merpeople. It's established in the source material. So there we go. Problem solved.

I was confused, so actually took the time to go back and re-read the TT/MisterMatt interaction. Does TT really still not get that MisterMatt wasn't serious?
This entire thread is surreal to me.

Its like a fairy tale. I would reccomend we all adapt fairy tale aliases, but somehow I don't think that would solve anything.
wow, just read over this thread and i have to say that some of you people are absolutely ridiculous. not to mention out of line. why don't you just stop for a second, and realize what it is that you are arguing over exactly.. oh that's right! A DISNEY FAIRYTALE!!! this is meant FOR CHILDREN, and children will enjoy it and love it no matter what race or ethnicity the actors may be... so let them enjoy the show without your negitivity reverberating off of these boards. i understand where you guys are coming from, to a certain extent. but you've gotta know where to draw the line, and to let it go. as i said, it is geared towards kids. not an overanalyzing audience member out to badmouth every decision that is made here.
whew, i think i'm finished here. and go ahead and naysay what i just said, but i am not the one dragging out this argument. thanks and have a nice day.

Dramaqueen, you misunderstand.
This is very important, children see many images of family in this day and age, and while children may not care who plays Ariel's father. A positive strong black man as a father figure in a predominantly white show (or a show geared for general audiences) is a rare thing, and should be supported, not criticized.
Children internalize what they see and hear, withouth analyzing it, but it certainly influences how they see families.
Children will listen is a perfect example of what im talking about. So you see that people like Sondheim have these ideas too, and Im not just a crackpot with a minor in sociology.
I think it should come down to the talent of the actor and fortunately, Norm has it.
So has this been confirmed?
I am wondering the same thing...has it been confirmed?
None of the Mermaid casting has been confirmed by Disney.

Does anyone feel like joining me in a rousing chorus of "I'm Like The Bluebird"? I think anyone who's still posting in the this thread, (myself inclueded) really should be warbling away on this classic Sondheim song.

To get back on topica a little...i think that he would be amazing if they beefed up the part a little. But, when does official casting for the show come out? doesn't it start in denver in the summer?
iwearshoes,
The rumor floating around is that principal casting will be officially announced the moment they find their Eric... which, obviously, they have yet to do.
