Posted: 6/22/11 at 12:44pmYou're not alone in thinking that. I was reading these boards around that time and I remember opinions on her performance were profoundly split. All I can say is "thrilling" was hardly the word I'd use; "comatose" would be more accurate. And her idea of how to sound like a proper southern woman was to mumble everything.

REALLY????
I mean...I understand people being polarized by a performance, but none of those words could come close to describing what I saw. I know she used early performances to really try lots of different things...but what I saw could hardly be called comatose or mumbly. Fascinating!

Posted: 6/22/11 at 1:30pmFascinating indeed. I remember people talking about what she was doing in previews, changing things, trying to figure out what worked. I saw a late performance--maybe two weeks prior to the end of the run--so I'd imagine that her interpretation was set by then.

Or maybe she was just done with the crazy one on stage with her!
Did I say that?

Posted: 6/22/11 at 1:50pmI went to school with Danny Sherman! He's going to be an awesome Mitch. Maybe the first do-able Mitch in theatre history.

Posted: 6/22/11 at 5:53pmI did see the Blythe Danner / Frances McDormand / Aiden Quinn STREETCAR. Frances as Stella actually stole the show, which really shouldn't happen with this piece. Danner was just a little off -- and not in the way Blanche is actually off. Since I barely remember Quinn, I guess it must not have blown me away.

Hecht and Rockwell are so curiously cast in these roles that my intuition says it will actually pay off. Hecht certainly has the versatility and Rockwell could be a very different street-wise Stanley with a sexual magnetism coming from a very different angle than your usual Stanley but just as dynamic and menacing. Best of all, they seem like they'd have very good chemistry together.
What I want to know is whether Ullman's extraordinary production with Blanchett will ever make it back to New York.
