Today is Wednesday, April 18, marking the official opening night performance of the Broadway transfer of the popular West End comedy ONE MAN, TWO GUVNORS, about a manservant pulled between two bosses — and his own voracious appetite — following previews that began April 6 at the Music Box Theatre.
According to production notes, "In One Man, Two Guvnors, Corden stars as Francis Henshall [the title's "one man"]. Always-famished and easily-confused, Henshall agrees to work for a local gangster as well as a criminal in hiding [ the "two guvnors"], both of whom are linked in a tangled web of schemes and romantic associations... none of which Francis can keep straight. So he has to do everything in his power to keep his two guvnors from meeting while trying to eat anything in sight along the way. Simple. Falling trousers, flying fish heads, star-crossed lovers, cross-dressing mobsters and a fabulous on-stage band are just some of what awaits [in the acclaimed] play…"

The Financial Times is mostly positive; he liked everything except thought it dragged a bit in the second act.

Should've said - the only negative that I could detect in the AP review was the very last line:
The action slows down slightly in the second act, but the entire production is so memorably hilarious that it could be deemed a two-hanky weepie — for tears of laughter.

Posted: 4/18/12 at 10:58pmGlad it is getting great reviews, was worried that the humour wouldn't translate, I hope the show get nominated at the Tonys especially James Corden although it has stiff competition.

Village Voice site says it's hilarious but Act Two is a bit disappointing.

Posted: 4/18/12 at 11:02pmI think with these reviews, James Corden is probably the frontrunner for the Best Actor Tony.

Posted: 4/18/12 at 11:08pmThe show lost out at the Oliviers ironically to other National Theatre productions so a win isn't a gurantee but I think Corden will be nominated for best actor and Oliver Chris for Supporting Actor as well as the play being nominated for Best New Play.

New York Daily News is positive (4 stars) and an all-out RAVE for Corden!!

"What “One Man” is all about, of course, is Francis. Corden’s Broadway debut was a small role in “The History Boys.” Six years later, he announces himself a blazing star. Hail to the clown prince of this royal scream."

A RAVE from the Philadelphia Inquirer:
http://www.philly.com/philly/entertainment/arts/20120418_Broadway_review__One_Man__Two_Guvnors.html
"The new Broadway show “One Man, Two Guvnors” is the hoot of the season. On one level, it’s a story about a dum-dum who becomes the full-time lackey for two different shady employers and who hasn’t the brains to handle one full-time job, let alone two. On another level, it’s a vehicle for running wonderfully amok — and taking an audience along.
Whatever it is, I dare you to see it and not laugh out loud, a lot."
