OUR MOTHER'S BRIEF AFFAIR Reviews

Limelight Mike seems to be off tonight, so I guess I'll be taking over.

Tonight is the opening night of Richard Greenberg's new play Our Mother's Brief Affair, produced by Manhattan Theatre Club, directed by Lynne Meadow, and starring Tony Award winner Linda Lavin!

Be sure to post the reviews right here!

Wow. Sounds like truly the event of the season.

Given that I am on the other side of the country and have no ability or desire to see this thing, does anyone want to PM me the big plot twist in this one?

I REALLY did not like this play. Definitely one of the worst shows I have seen so far this season.

To Chairin

I pm'd you the plot. Agree with bwayphreak. Without. Lavin there is no reason to actually sit thru the whole thing..

I found the reviews overall to be too kind. One of the worst plays I've seen in recent memory, Broadway or not. MTC should be embarrassed for producing it, no matter who the playwright is.

I'm surprised at how kind the Times was.

A little swash, a bit of buckle - you'll love it more than bread.

One of the worst plays I have ever seen, maybe the worst. Lavin is very good. If you happen to have tickets or have to go, watch Lavin the entire time, even when she's sitting in a chair in the shadows.

The play should have stayed in the playwrights drawer. Much ado about

nothing. Linda Lavin does a great job in a thankless play.

Watching Linda Lavin on stage is like the best master class in acting you can ever get. I still want to see this -- not unlike wanting to watch James Earl Jones read the telephone book.

I saw this tonight and loved it. Maybe because I'm a gay Jew and could relate somewhat to it, but I guess I'll be in the minority with this one.

I (luckily) had free tickets, but still walked out half way through...

All of the audience around me (mostly geriatric) really loved it on the way out and were buzzing. I just assumed I was in the minority until I read the reviews.

Lavin was excellent as always but the children left something to be desired. It was like watching a seasoned Broadway actress acting with mediocre regional theatre actors. To be fair the siblings parts were underwritten, but I suspect had the 2 roles been played by other actors (Jeremy Shamos comes to mind) with more rehearsal, the proceedings would have been elevated. The siblings were both "acting" and not communicating. Lavin had an exquisite monologue towards the end of the second act. I will say that the director was successful with the transitions between the past and the present but it felt much longer than 2 hours. The cues could have been picked up in the first act especially in the siblings scenes since not much was transpiring between them. Neither sibling seemed gay nor did they seem like twins.

I hated this and would have walked out at intermission if doing so wasn't against the user agreement with the comp service I use. Truly boring and bizarre, and not in anything approaching a good way. I enjoyed Lavin but the show itself was a true stinker.

I guess I am in the minority here as far as Lavin's performance goes. I found the ENTIRE production to be vastly underwhelming INCLUDING Lavin.
