Basically, they are using this to drum up support for a tour- if a tour is successful, it will pay back the investors in NY, and Davenport will be paid back and get a weekly office fee, etc.
The people who put up the $200k for this tour commercial will not be paid back.

So where is the Kickstarter money going then? I thought you were referring to whoever has obviously already paid for the Tony performance but did you mean the many individual backers from Kickstarter?

While AnnieBlack is technically correct, there is nothing in the contract between Deaf West (Kickstarter campaign creator) and campaign backers that says the campaign backers would be paid back. The only contract - read the Kickstarter fine print - is this: if you are a backer, and you are pledging at a given level, technically you are buying a cast album or t-shirt or social media shoutout or dinner with cast member, etc. and the campaign creator must fulfill exactly that.

You are misunderstanding something. It is not the "campaign backers" who will get their money back; it is the persons or entities that loaned the money to DW who will get paid back. And much of that money will undoubtedly be wash transactions between said persons or entities and themselves, in the form of the juiced "contributions" they will make so the "campaign" closes and they can get whatever money the gullibles threw into the coffers. It's a combination scam and cockamamie marketing "concept."

HogansHero - i'm not misunderstanding at all and I get the likely reality of it. But what you are saying is implied, not contractual. The only thing Deaf West - as the creator of the Kickstarter campaign - has to fulfill is the reward stated at each level. The backer will get charged if the campaign is successful. Where the money actually goes is Deaf West's call only.
Pretty surprised that all the talk about what was allowed and not allowed on Kickstarter have all been deleted... someone is trolling the boards who works for davenport obviously.
^What do you mean it was deleted? I still see it on page 7..

that is where you are partially wrong. yes ---- it is their call how they choose to use the funds. but they are a public organization with a 501c3 designation to justify and protect. so they must be transparent about how those funds are used and where they go. we need to accept that there is no illegal crap happening here.... dont think anyone is even implying that. we are are speaking to the issues of integrity, honesty, transparency and best practices as someone else mentioned. the money is going to a public charity. not a private company or a single person.
@johnny, @jm226-
JM is right, but also johnny if there is a note that is a contract too. (And there would have to be a note in order for repaying whoever fronted the money to be legit.)
How come I can't find a list of who's on Deaf West's board except through the Wayback Machine?

very, very alarming but not entirely surprising. you can also get a better understanding of their financial situation --- PRIOR TO SPRING AWAKENING --- and the makeup of their board by viewing the last publicly available 990 return from 2014: http://www.guidestar.org/FinDocuments/2014/954/315/2014-954315054-0c0f0d93-9.pdf
only two years ago they had less than $50,000 in net assets -- AKA: their bank account. sorry but unless they came into some crazy amount of money, i call BS on the idea that some posters have written here about Deaf West fronting that cash. there's no way. it has to be Davenport. soooo shady!!!!
Oh, look, Ken Davenport's involved with shady crowd-funding.
I'm shocked. Really, I am.
(And here comes Namo in 3... 2...)
....I don't think namo is coming back.

Ahhhh, still nice to see Namo's funny posts. I may be newer to these boards but I've been reading them for years, and Namo was always one of my favorite people on here.

Wow, harsh. Even with this, I'd still like to see them perform at the Tonys.
