Karma will get them....if they raise the money, I hope that their performance will be interrupted with a breaking news story. The nerve of these people!
Just got an email from them (I must have put my email down when entering the Spring Awakening lotto). Subject line "We're performing on the Tonys...and we need your help" - not sure if it's anything to judge by, but the subject line certainly sounds pretty sure of that it's happening.
I think they will raise the money thanks to some wealthy benefactors in the end. After all, the donation is 100% tax-deductible right? Speaking of which, are the fees that the other musicals pay the Tony's to perform also tax-deductible?
Do we know for sure that the money would pay back KD and not DW? I'm wondering if its possible Deaf West knows they want to do it, and have the money in the piggy to do it, but just barely. So as to not bankrupt future productions, they are trying to recoup as much of it as possible?
Kad, I agree with Davenport that it would be fiscally irresponsible to fund the appearance in light of his investors having lost money on the production and with no, as yet, confirmed plans for a tour, he has nothing to promote. I doubt Davenport has funded the appearance. It seems more likely that someone or some consortium with personal ties and affection for DW is behind it. And if DW proposed trying to reimburse, it would have been churlish for Davenport to object. Of course the performance won't do Davenport any harm, but I'm not quite as cynical about it as are you and others.

If you fully understood and appreciated best practices of non-profit governance and fundraising, you would be cynical. As I previously stated, there's nothing illegal about what they're doing. There is, however, something morally and ethically questionable about it. And no, they are not being transparent about it. If they were, we would understand how the money is being fronted and from who or what source. If the organization somehow has $200,000 in the bank to spend (I highly doubt it based on their 990 forms, which can be viewed at guidestar.org), that should be acknowledged and explained. They frame the content on the Kickstarter page to make contributors believe they must reach the $200,000 goal by June 11th or the performance won't happen. That's disingenuous and would never pass the "smell test" by leadership from any other respectable non-profit organization. I'm actually more disappointed in Deaf West than I am in Davenport because I expect more from Deaf West. Ken? Not so much....

Losing might be the wrong word - theyre still getting the tax-advantage out of the donation, and seeing the show highlighted on national TV (even if it might have happened anyway)...

Liza, I said in an earlier post "It may have been better had they said we have an angel who's agreed to foot the bill and we'd like to pay them back." So I do get your point.

I suppose you're right! I just feel sorry for all the teenagers and young adults that are using their money to fund something that's already happening. Either way though, I hope they pick a worthy number to showcase.
They/them.

Curious if the actual costs come in less, lets say $175,000 and they raise $205,000, can Davenport & Co confirm that the the extra profits will go to Deaf West and not to cover losses in the Broadway production

you're talking about misappropriation of funds by deaf west which would really put them in hot water. i suspect they will keep whatever excess funds they get and transfer over to a general fund or artistic/new play development fund. always read the fine print.

Sigh, realistically he has 'nothing to promote' but in my ideal world it would still be fiscally responsible because they're promoting unique and diverse theatre on national television. Disappointed, not surprised.
@seahag2-they announced preposterously enormous multi-national audience for the live stream as a way of validating and touting Davenport's "brilliant" new "model" for how to make theatre. Except that the funny thing about the internet is that it has fingerprints, and those fingerprints were at odds with the hype by a factor of 100s or 1000s. Still, the same sort of gullible people who believe the narrative on this kickstarter believed the BS about DDLL. What was it that PT Barnum said?
