'Oliver!' -Drury Lane 'Live' Cast Recording

Last nights performance was the final one of 4 this week that have been recorded for release as a complete 'live' cast recording available in a few weeks. Cameron gave in to immense public pressure on a daily basis to get Jodi and Rowan recorded.
Oh well.

Supposedly they are having 100s of requests for it at each and every performance.
To do a live recording lie they have is not gonna dent Camerons pocket, the pay on this kind of project is almost an insult to the performers. In Just a few weeks he will be reaping in 1000s of £s a day the minute that CD hits the theatre kiosk!

Oh, I dont blame him for this, I just dont think it is needed as the old cast recording is sufficient, infact, im going to refuse to but this CD, and i will go out and buy the original!

They originally were going to go down the 'Joseph' route and reissue the Palladium CD with newly recored tracks by Jodi and Rowan but that was going to be more costly than a live recording. Very pointless indeed as in just a few months she will bound to have an album out herself and then the millions of Jo Public who want her voice on CD will have that.
And here I am without a London cat Recording of 'Hairspray'! No justice!

I was excited when I heard about this back in November. I think its a good idea. A live recording will always be better than studio recordings, because the actors really act the part in front of an audience - as opposed to doing it in a studio. Also, people seem to think it's cheaper than doing a studio recording. The time this will take in post production (editing, mixing, fine tuning) will cost just as much as a normal recording session.

Also - they'd better release it on iTunes - as people just aren't buying cast albums anymore.

I look forward to this recording!

Personally I'd stick to the Original 1960's cast. I wonder if there will be "Bonus tracks" with Tamsin Carroll rendering her version of Nancy? My money would be on one track of her doing As Long As He Needs Me.

Thats exactly what I was thinking/hoping. I will find out tomorrow but I doubt it very much. My friend in the show said she has been on and is absolutely amazing!

I have always found live recordings such a cop out, I dislike Zorro and WWRY's recordings for that reason. The production deserves a good quality recording. There's no lack of money in the Oliver! coffers at the moment.

Lemming - fabulous turn of phrase there!

I remember a campaign back in the Billy Elliot day for three recordings, one for each Billy. It was completely uneconomical, but I could see the desire behind it. If they're not even bothering with a proper studio recording for this, then I can't see them going through any other luxuries like that. If it was recorded four nights in the week though, then there may be multiple Olivers in the same recording. Gwion did come first, though.

I just saw Oliver on my recent trip to the UK. I would certainly buy a recording as an addition to my collection. I never download anything. I would hope for a studio recording instead of a live CD. If they were doing a DVD film version, that's another matter.
Nice to see that people on the West End boards can be just as rude as people on this side of the Atlantic. Obviously good manners are dying everywhere. Anonymity is poisonous.

Yea, it was me because why would it be. It wasn't until I met my friend in the show the other night when he told the incredible demand for Jodi to be caught on disc made them move pretty fast!
It still pisses me off.
